DollarWise Decorator
  Tips and Tricks

Dear Friend,

At the start of every new year, after all the holiday decorations have come down, I always like to re-think, re-arrange and re-invent all the things in my home.  This is my design philosophy...I call it the RE-Factor

During these tough economic times, we all spend more time at home and living well seems to be more important then ever.  A well designed interior does not require limitless funds. Taste and style is determined by who you are, not what you buy.

In this, the first issue of the DollarWise Decorator Newsletter, I hope to encourage you to think of new possibilities for your home and maybe even try a few!

Please enjoy this issue and email me with any questions or topics you'd like to see in future issues .

Sincerely,

Keep it Forever or Change it on a Whim
The question I'm most often asked is how to choose a paint color.   Color can be the most important feature in a room, it's also the least expensive way to change the entire look and feel of your home.  Surprisingly, The best place to look for color is most likely right in front of you!  Our homes are a reflection of us and the things we love, so with this in mind...find your inspiration piece!  An inspiration piece can be anything from a picture, a fabric or even a beautiful view.  Anything you love can become an inspiration for great design.

So what to do once you've found your inspiration?  Time to gather the color swatches and pull your favorite color right out of the piece.  The paint color does not have to exactly match your inspiration color.  In fact, if the wall color is slightly different then your inspiration color, the result will give your room more depth while remaining harmonious.  Choose one or two more complementary colors to use for accents in accessories and you've got yourself a color scheme!  Congratulations!

A final note about color selections

It's no myth that color can influence our emotions.  They can calm or even energize us.  The following is a list of colors and how they can effect us emotionally.
  • Blue - Relaxes and produces a feeling of calm
  • Green - Refreshes and encourages emotional growth
  • Red - Stimulates and adds drama (and makes us hungry!)
  • Yellow - Increases energy
  • Purple - Comforts and is said to draw out intuition
  • White - Purifies and enlivens other colors
  • Black - Encourages independence

Understanding the emotional aspects of color will help you create that relaxing bedroom or energetic playroom.  You can create just the right mood simply by choosing the right color!
