FORCES TO AVOID

WHEN MOUNTING A STACK ACTUATOR

To prevent damage to the ceramic elements or electrodes, mount a bare stack actuator only at its end faces. An encased stack can be mounted at the end faces or clamped at its circumference. In coupling an actuator to a mechanical system, exclude bending, tilting or shear forces that could inhibit the stroke or damage the actuator. A planar face and the center of a spherical tip provide suitable contact. Planar face contact is acceptable if one of the faces is free moving. If the stroke for an actuator proves insufficient for a particular task, an alternative to using a larger actuator, or multiple actuators in series, is to amplify the stroke by modifying the mounting configuration.

WHY HARD PZT?

MANY COMPOSITIONS MANY APPLICATIONS

Hard ceramics have characteristics generally opposite those of soft ceramics, including Curie points above 300C, small piezoelectric charge constants, large electromechanical coupling factors, and large mechanical quality factors. They also are more difficult to polarize or depolarize. Although hard ceramics generally are more stable than soft ceramics, they cannot produce the same large displacements. Hard ceramics are compatible with high mechanical loads and high voltages.

Be aware, however, that a soft ceramic can be prepared to exhibit some characteristics approaching those of a hard ceramic, or vice versa. Thus, when choosing a ceramic for a particular application, it can be useful to look beyond general categorization, and carefully compare specific characteristics.

Some Typical Applications:

    • Ultrasonic cleaners
    • Ultrasonic atomizers
    • Transformers
    • Underwater echo sounders
    • High power actuators
    • Vibratory motors
    • Ultrasonic surgery
    • Sonochemistry
