APPLICATION CHALLENGES
Any type of actuator enhances certain desired features at the expense of others. For example, the design of a flexional actuator maximizes movement but sacrifices force. Selection of a suitable actuator depends on knowing which desirable features are most important to the application at hand or, conversely, knowing which drawbacks must be minimized.
The stroke for a stack actuator is proportional to the height of the stack of elements (see Table). Depending on the ceramic material used to construct the stack, the maximum strain (stroke / stack height) can equal up to 0.15% to 0.2% of the height of the stack. The blocking force developed by a stack is proportional to the cross-sectional area of the stack (see Table). There also is an important relationship between strain and power consumption: the power requirement of an actuator increases by a factor of two in proportion with increases in strain.
