Connecting Women with Green Jobs Training |
You may remember that back in early January, Grand Rapids Community College (in partnership with WRC and other community agencies) received a $4 million federal grant. The grant's purpose is to train low-income Grand Rapidians with green jobs skills. WRC's role is to recruit women for the training.
After of few months of ramping up the program, WRC is now well on its way to connecting women with green jobs training.
Carol Janssen, WRC's Education and Training Specialist for Pathways Out of Poverty, said, "We are excited to be on the leading edge of new technology, industries and jobs!
Michigan is attracting more and more green manufacturers so there will be many new jobs over the next few years requiring specific training and skills.
This program will train and ultimately place participants in jobs that will provide a living wage. We are looking for participants with a wide range of skills, from office to construction to manufacturing, and just about everything in between."
Right now, awareness sessions are being held throughout the city to provide information to those interested. Please call (616) 234-3600 for information about when and where to atted an awareness session. |
| In Her Words: "A New Life!" | |
"Reflecting on all of the help I received from WRC when I was going through my divorce three years ago, WRC helped me start a new life!
I returned to college, earned a Bachelor's degree, applied to five graduate schools, and was recently accepted to one along with a teaching position. Now my new career plan to become a university professor is coming true!
I just had to share this great news with you and say thanks for everything."

J.Jill Awards $15K Grant To WRC |
On May 28, WRC received the welcome news that the J.Jill Compassion Fund at the Boston Foundation will be providing a $15,000 grant for our SOLO program for low-income single moms.
"We are thrilled to be a grantee of the J.Jill Compassion Fund for the third year in a row," said Sharon Caldwell-Newton, Executive Director of WRC. "We know that there is stiff competition for these grants and we are pleased to have been selected. The generosity of the J.Jill Compassion Fund will allow us to assist 60 single moms this year on their journey to economic self-sufficiency through our SOLO program." The SOLO program works with its clients in a supportive one-on-one coaching atmosphere to explore career opportunities, create plans of action, develop resumes and cover letters, offer employability and life skills workshops, and connect with other resources to ensure that job searches are successful. Based in Quincy, Massachusetts, J.Jill is a women's specialty retailer of comfortably sophisticated clothing and accessories available in catalogs, on the web and at over 200 stores nationwide.
