Greetings!
Things have been so busy, last month got away from me! I traveled to San Diego, CA, for the Association of Pet Dog Trainers Educational Conference and Trade Show. I gave two presentations, and was extremely honored to receive the APDT Dr. Ian Dunbar Member of the Year Award. | |

I also attended two special workshops, one on the new canine sport sensation K9 NoseWork, and one on teaching Fiesty Fidos classes. I have long thought our area could benefit from a class for dog-reactive dogs. I'm still finalizing details, but hope to offer our first reactive dog class next year! As we are in the season of thanks, I want to thank YOU and your dogs for all your support. I appreciate you! Please give your dogs cookies from me! Best regards, Teoti Anderson, CPDT-KA, KPA-CTPPawsitive Results, LLC |
No One Guessed the Ollie!

Ollie

Thank you to everyone who tried to guess what breeds Ollie was! Unfortunately, no one guessed correctly. We had a variety of attempts from Pit Bull to Dalmatian.
According to the Wisdom Panel DNA testing, Ollie is half Australian Cattle Dog and half Siberian Husky.
You can definitely see the cattle dog in his body type, and those brilliant blue eyes definitely echo Husky!
If you've been guessing about your dog's ancestry, don't forget that Pawsitive Results is now offering discounts for Wisdom Panel Canine DNA Testing Kits. Solve the mystery of your dog's heritage and save $10! Just visit www.wisdompanel.com. When you order, be sure to use our code -- APDT25 -- to get $10 off the cost of one DNA Test Kit. And if you do the test, please email Pawsitive Results with the results, we'd love to know, too!
Thank you to assistant instructor Ryan Dawkins for sharing her boy with us for the contest!

In the News
recently interviewed me for its fall issue. Thanks to the magazine for asking me, and for helping me highlight the benefits of positive training!

Is It Learning ... or Shutdown? One of the things I enjoy most about my job is helping people understand their dogs better. Dogs communicate to us all the time. You can learn to understand them better!
For example, what is your dog telling you during a training session? Are his eyes bright? Ears up? Does he seem eager? Is his tail wagging, but not overly rapidly? These are all signs that he is enjoying your training session. Training your dog should be educational, not punishment!
Dogs who are stressed may lick their lips, turn their heads away from you or turn their entire bodies away. They may yawn. Their tails may tuck, or wag extremely rapidly. Their ears may be flat or back. If your dog shows these behaviors, or if he looks like he's "apologizingly friendly," this means he is stressed.
For example, you're teaching a dog to "down/stay." You use a punishment-based method and the dog immediately lies down. He is licking his lips, turning his head slightly away from you and yawns. He doesn't move. This is teaching the dog to lie still, but at what price? This has actually taught the dog to stay put to avoid punishment.
Training shouldn't be a chore, for you or your dog. Make sure your training sessions are short, fun and productive. You'll definitely know what kind of progress you are making. And now you will better understand how your dog feels about it, too! |
