Greetings!
 | | Teoti and Sawyer |
They grow up so fast! Sawyer is now just past 6 months old and all legs. I think he aspires to be a male model when he grows up.
In this issue you'll find updates on Puppy K, an introduction to Pawsitive Rewards, information about a dog treat recall, an alert about a local rabies outbreak and important safety information about not leaving dogs in hot cars. If you enjoy the information, I'd appreciate you passing it along to a friend!
You'll also see the latest class schedule -- please note we're about to take registration for Rally for Fun! It's the only time the class will be offered this year, taught by Pawsitive Results assistant instructor Phyllis Beasley, CPDT-KA. If you want to continue developing your dog's skills by trying out a fun sport, consider Rally for Fun!
This coming weekend is the July 4 holiday. Please keep your dogs indoors during the fireworks celebrations. A frightened dog can end up miles away from home! If you have fireworks in your neighborhood, don't forget to check your yard the next morning to make sure there is no debris in your yard that Fido can eat. Wishing you a safe and happy holiday!
Give your dogs cookies from me!

Exciting Changes for Puppy K!
Sometimes you plan and plan for a new puppy. You may wait years until it's the right time, or until the right puppy comes along. And sometimes ... you end up with a puppy you never saw coming! Because you can't always plan puppy love, Pawsitive Results is introducing Start Any Month Enrollment for Puppy Kindergarten! We're also introducing new class packages to offer you some flexibility in enrollment. It's so important to get puppies a good start in life, especially behaviorally. The impressions a puppy has during his first 20 weeks of life can impact him forever! Our Puppy Kindergarten class helps you learn how to properly socialize and handle your new furry friend, along with all the common challenges a puppy can bring. And now you don't have to wait until problems occur -- you can start any month! The first Wednesday of every month will be our orientation. Classes are at 6:30 p.m. at Grace Animal Hospital in Lexington.
You now have a choice of two packages: Package #1: Orientation (1 1/2 hours) plus 2 one-hour classes = $65 Perfect for puppies close to the 20-week-old cutoff or to help kick start your socialization and training while waiting for our Family Manners I class to begin! Introducing Pawsitive Rewards! As a big "thank you" to my continuing students, I have introduced the Pawsitive Rewards card! The card entitles students to 10% off future group classes and 15% off all retail merchandise. In order to qualify for Pawsitive Rewards, you must either: - Be enrolled in the current Family Manners III class
- Have attended at least three of our classes, beginning in 2011
For example, if you attended a 2011 Puppy Kindergarten class, then Family Manners I, then Rally for Fun, you qualify! While the qualification period begins in 2011 only, you don't have to attend all three classes this year. If you attend two classes this year, for example, and a third one next year, you qualify! Cards are effective the first night of your third class. The Pawsitive Rewards card is valid for your household -- so the savings can really add up if you have multiple dogs or people who need training! Here are some examples: - You take a dog through two classes. You get a new puppy and your spouse takes that dog through a class. Three classes = qualify!
- You get two littermates. You and your spouse each take a pup to Puppy Kindergarten -- that's two classes. You then sign them both up for Family Manners I. One Family Manners I class at full price would make three classes, so you now qualify for Pawsitive Rewards. This means the second Family Manners I class fee would be 10% off.
Since I get so many families who enjoy attending class together, with some families taking turns who trains their dog and others who have more than one dog, I thought it would be great to reward the entire household for participating in positive training! While anyone in your home can take advantage of the card, it is not transferable outside your household. I am very appreciative of my dedicated students who continue to choose Pawsitive Results for their dog behavior education -- so "click" to you, with the Pawsitive Rewards card as your treat! |

Pig Ear Recalls | |
Bravo! is voluntary recalling boxes of Bravo! Pig Ears Chews because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.
Salmonella can affect pets and humans, especially if people do not thoroughly wash their hands after handling contaminated items.
Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.
You can find details on the recall here.

Famously Hot
The promotional slogan for Columbia, SC is "famously hot," and that's not an exaggeration. Especially when it comes to leaving dogs in cars! Summer has just begun, and it's already dangerously hot out there.
Do you know how hot cars can get? Cars act like greenhouses, trapping the sun's heat inside.
A Stanford University study revealed that even on a cool day of 72 degrees, a car's internal temperature can spike to 116 degrees in just an hour. And keeping the windows cracked hardly slowed the temperature rise at all!
Make sure your best friend stays cool this summer. The errand you run "for just a few minutes" is not worth a lifetime of regret! Join the United Animal Nations' My Dog is Cool Campaign. Print out the My Dog is Cool pledge, take a close-up picture of your dog(s) with the pledge, and send it to United Animal Nations for its Cool Dogs gallery. You can find details here, as well as more information on how you can help educate your neighbors on the dangers of hot cars.

Rabies in Kershaw County The Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) reports that three residents of Kershaw County (SC) are under a doctor's care after being exposed to a cat that has tested positive for rabies. "The incident began June 16th in a rural part of the county north of Camden when a woman found a kitten under her vehicle," said Sue Ferguson of DHEC's Bureau of Environmental Health. "She and two of her children were scratched while handling the kitten." Once rabies reaches the brain, the disease is fatal to humans and animals. Please make sure your pets are up to date on their vaccinations. Ferguson adds, ""If you think you have been exposed to the rabies virus through a bite, scratch or the saliva of a possibly infected animal, immediately wash the affected area with plenty of soap and water," she said. "Then be sure to get medical attention and report the incident to DHEC." For more information about rabies, see DHEC's Web page at: http://www.scdhec.gov, click on the A-Z list, select "R," then click on rabies or contact DHEC's Kershaw County Environmental Health Office at (803) 425-6051. |
