Pawsitively Speaking
Greetings!

Happy December!

As promised in the last newsletter, we're announcing some innovations for 2011. You'll also find the upcoming class schedule. If you still need some (last minute) ideas on what to get your dog or favorite dog lover for the holiday, I've also included some favorite things!

Thank you so much for making 2010 a memorable year for Pawsitive Results. I sincerely appreciate your support! We're so excited for the new year, and I look forward to you and your dogs being a part of it. On behalf of my wonderful assistants Phyllis Beasley and Ryan Dawkins, we wish you and your families a safe and happy holiday!

Exciting Changes for 2011

Pawsitive Results is always looking for ways to improve your experience with us. We've got some great things in store for 2011!

Click and Treat!
All classes are upgrading to clicker training. We've long used a verbal marker, but a clicker is much more precise and consistent. It's clearer communication for dogs, which means more successful training for you!

Please note our classes will feature proper use of the clicker. (Just because some trainers use clickers doesn't mean they are using them correctly.) All our classes are based on scientific learning theory, with all instructors qualified to teach the clicker method. Teoti Anderson is also a graduate of the Karen Pryor Academy (KPA) and a KPA Certified Training Partner (CTP).

Beginning in 2011, you will only need to attend one orientation class, no matter how many sessions you eventually attend. Our orientation is expanding to 1 1/2 hours as we add clicker practice exercises!

We will also offer a short Clicker Transitions class for students who want to learn clicker use and targeting. If you attend this class, you will not need to attend future orientations.

Credit Cards Welcome
Pawsitive Results will now accept all payments for classes. Up until this point, the county recreation departments handled all finances. While this arrangement worked, we understand there were some related inconveniences. Students had to pay in person, and could only pay by check or cash. No longer!

When you sign up for class, you will get an e-mail invoice that will allow you to pay with a credit card online! Just click the "Pay Now" button and you will be taken to a secure website to enter your credit card information, or pay via PayPal.Your payment lets you immediately secure your reservation in our classes, without a trip to the Leisure Center. (No more need for pre-registration vouchers!)

Those customers who still prefer to pay for their class reservations by check will be able to mail them directly to Pawsitive Results.

Want to use your credit card to purchase a harness, collar, toys, books or treats from our inventory? We will also be able to accept your credit cards in person!

Other Updates
  • Puppy Kindergarten will feature a shorter session and new location next year. We are moving Puppy K to Grace Animal Clinic in Lexington! We're very excited to team up with veterinarian Dr. Tim Loonam and his staff to offer our class at their facility. You do not have to be a Grace Animal Hospital client to attend the class.

  • Attendance for all Lexington Leisure Center classes (not just Pawsitive Results) has been declining over the past few years. We don't want to move away from our Lexington customers! We do, however, need to consider the business implications of decreasing registrations. We are going to experiment with a reduced schedule here next year, and bring back Family Manners I to this location.

  • Our prices will increase slightly for 2011. Our class prices have not changed in several years. With the new price of $100 per class session, we are still extremely competitive. Especially when you consider what you get for your money. Read what sets Pawsitive Results apart from the pack.

We are looking forward to seeing you and your dogs in 2011!

Christmas StockingsThere's not much time left! Still wondering what to get the dog lover or canine on your list? Here are a few of my favorite doggie items, along with some contributions from Pawsitive Results students!

brake-fast Bowl
brake-fast bowl
Logan inhales his food. I don't think he chews it at all! He used to sometimes vomit afterwards, due to the speed of inhalation. The brake-fast bowl put an end to that. It has a raised design that prevents Logan from bolting his food. He still eats pretty fast, but in a much healthier manner!

Slap Happy
Finian and the Slap Happy toy
Finian is obsessed with this toy! He's known as the Butterfly Assassin when it comes to stuffed toys, so I like that the Premier Slap Happy is stuffing-free. It has a free floating squeaker and an inner bouncy frame. I think it's the floppy arms, though, that get Fin all silly!

Kong Braidz
Kong Braidz
These have also been a huge hit at my house, although I'm sad to report the Zebra Braidz met an untimely demise at the unsupervised jaws of a certain Papillon. (See why he has the reputation?) If your dog is a toy destroyer, don't leave this alone with him. But supervised, Kong Braidz can make for a lot of great tugging and fetching!

Other Toys
Brenda Hall reports her Leonberger, Cypress, loves to suck on a sheepskin ball. He carries it around with him and brings it to bed every night, which makes it quite soggy! Mixed breed Pally loves her bone and a stuffed hippo that is slowly losing his stuffing.

DeeDee Whitaker reports Chow Bing loves his plush birthday cake complete with plush candles. It has a chip inside that plays "Happy Birthday!" Mixed breed Pepper, unfortunately, has decided that the wood pile is her favorite chew obsession!

Handmade Crafts
Etsy.com features some wonderful artists who make handcrafted items. If you need something for a dog lover, here are two shops I've ordered from with great results:

The Lab: this shop sells adorable Labrador baby items, beanbags and "pup cups" -- cute storage cups.

CB Pottery Works: this shop sells lovely pottery, including dog paw mugs, dishes and vases.
