News from Pawsitive Results, LLCNovember 2010
Pawsitively Speaking
Greetings!

Finian and Teoti
We are heading into the home stretch of 2010 here at Pawsitive Results. Our November classes underway, and all my speaking engagements are done for the year!

This month I successfully completed my recertification as a CPDT-KA (Certified Professional Dog Trainer - Knowledge Assessed). This means I completed at least 36 hours of approved continuing education within the last three years. (I actually completed at least three times the requirement -- I love to learn!)

I'm working on some exciting changes for next year -- stay tuned for our December newsletter to find out more. In the meantime, in this issue you'll find out about my contributions to a new book, a recent study about dog bites, news about assistant Ryan Dawkin's dog collars and a fun Web cartoon. I also want to know about you and your dog's favorite things!

During this season of thanks, please know that I am thankful for each of you and your wonderful dogs. Thank you so much for helping make Pawsitive Results such a success!

All Dogs Have Teeth

Snarling DogWhen you think of a biting dog, what picture comes to mind? A raging Pit Bull? A grumpy Chihuahua? A beautiful Golden Retriever? The fact is that all dogs have teeth, and all are capable of biting people.

A study done by Vikram Durairai of the University of Colorado School of Medicine looked at 537 children treated for facial dog bites at the Children's Hospital on the university's Anschutz Medical Campus. Durairai found that 68% of bites occurred in children less than 5 years old, with the highest incidents in 3 year olds.

The dog breeds involved were most often a breed considered "good" with children. Mixed breeds were responsible for 23% of the bites, followed by Labrador Retrievers (13.7%), Rottweilers (4.9%), German Shepherds (4.4%) and Golden Retrievers (3%).

In most of the cases, the child bitten knew the dog through the family, friend or neighbor. In more than half of the cases, the dog was provoked when the child petted it too aggressively, startled or stepped on the dog.

"What is clear from our data is that virtually any breed of dog can bite," Durairaj said. "The tendency of a dog to bite is related to heredity, early experience, later socialization and training, health and victim behavior."

What Are Your Dog's Favorite Things?

Christmas PuppyIn the next issue I'll be highlighting some of my favorite dog-related items in time for holiday shopping. I'm also eager to find out what makes your dog's tail wag!

Does your dog have a favorite toy? Do you have something that you love that makes living with your dog easier? Share! You just might give someone a great idea for a holiday gift.

Send me an e-mail explaining what the item is, and please put Favorite Things in the Subject line. I'll share the results in the December issue. Thanks!

Is Your Dog a Cartoon?

Have you discovered Draw the Dog? It's the creation of ex-Disney animator Jim George.

Jim draws wonderful cartoons of our canine friends, which come to life on this website courtesy of his friend Bruce Kasanoff.

Send them a picture of your dog along with tales of your dog's exploits, and they may become the inspiration for a new cartoon!

For a lighthearted break in your day, check out Draw the Dog.
