Pawsitively Speaking
Greetings!

Finian and TeotiThe year is off to a great start at Pawsitive Results, although I can't believe it's almost March!

If you missed our Family Manners III class last year, please take special note of the class information later in this issue.

WLTX-TV news invited me for a return appearance, so I decided it was time for Finian the Papillon to make his television debut. He and his ears were a hit! On the writing front, I'm wrapping up my next column for Modern Dog magazine. I also recently reviewed a book for The APDT Chronicle of the Dog and I thought those of you with children in your lives would enjoy it, so I've included information on it here.

Spring is just around the corner! Give your dogs cookies from me,

Teaching Kids About Dog Safety
child and puppy

It's so important to teach children how to be safe around dogs. Not every dog likes children. Even dogs that usually love kids may have moments when they don't want a child to hug or touch them. Dogs that are stressed are much more likely to bite.

Stephanie Calmenson has written a book that can help teach your children how to properly interact with dogs, with illustrations by Jan Ormerod. It's called "May I Pet Your Dog?" (Clarion Books, 32 pages, 2007, $9.95).

The book features Harry, a friendly Dachshund, who coaches a young boy how to meet his fellow canine friends. He also warns him when they encounter dogs the boy should avoid.

When explaining how to be safe should a child encounter a stray dog, the author advises "being a tree or being a rock." This isn't explained thoroughly in the book, so you may want to explain to your child exactly what to do:

Being A Tree
Children should wrap their arms like branches tight around their bodies. Their feet should take root firmly in the ground. And like all good trees, they should look up, towards the sun.

Being a Rock
Children should clasp their hands together, then hold them against the back of their necks. They should then curl up into little balls on the ground, and like all good rocks look straight down into the earth.

What these activities do is teach children to be STILL. One of the worst things a child can do is run from a dog, as this will likely trigger the dog to chase, which could then lead to an attack.

Teach your kids how to treat dogs with kindness, and how to be safe around them. It will help build a lifetime of respect for our canine friends.
