"Max Weinreich in America" Caught in Copenhagen at the outbreak of WWII, YIVO scholar Max Weinreich was faced with a terrible dilemma: travel home to family and friends in Vilna in a time of great peril or take refuge in the relative safety of New York City, home to YIVO's American division. Having already spent a year in the US, Weinreich entertained few illusions about the future of Yiddish there. But he also foresaw unprecedented opportunities for the development of Jewish Studies. How did he come to understand America and its Jews? And what did Weinreich believe would become of YIVO and of Yiddish outside of their Eastern European heartland?

Dr. Kalman Weiser Kalman Weiser is the Silber Family Professor of Modern Jewish Studies at York University, Toronto. He is the author of Jewish People, Yiddish Nation: Noah Prylucki and the Folkists in Poland (2011), which has won the 2012 Canadian Jewish Book Award for scholarship, and co-editor of Czernowitz at 100: The First Yiddish Language Conference in Historical Perspective (2010).

Gitl Schaechter-ViswanathGitl Schaechter-Viswanath grew up in the staunchly Yiddishist Schaechter home. She currently works as a clinical consultant in long-term care. Since 2005 she has been stylistic editor of Afn Shvel, the periodical of the League for Yiddish. She lives in Teaneck, New Jersey, and is the mother of three Yiddish-speaking children. She has published one volume of poetry, Sudden Rain: Yiddish Poems (Israel Book, Tel Aviv, 2003).

Lorin Sklamberg
Lorin Sklamberg is a founding member of the Grammy Award-winning Yiddish-American roots band The Klezmatics. He has been heard on innumerable recordings and live shows and teaches Yiddish song from S�o Paulo, London, Paris and Weimar to Kiev and St. Petersburg. By day Lorin serves as the Sound Archivist of New York's YIVO Institute for Jewish Research.
