Oral HPV More Common in Men A study published in The Journal of the American Medical Association found that men are nearly three times more likely than women to be infected with oral HPV, which can cause oropharyngeal cancers affecting the back of the tongue and the throat. By looking at nearly 6,000 testing samples across the country, researchers found that 6.9% of adults and teenagers are infected with oral HPV. Overall, 10.1% of men were infected orally with HPV of one type or another, compared with just 3.6% of women. The reason for the higher rate among men was unclear; however, scientists identified certain behaviors that raised the risk of being infected, including increasing age, greater sexual activity, and smoking cigarettes. This is the first major study to document the national prevalence of oral HPV.
