| 2010 CDC STD Surveillance Data Available | It is estimated that there are 19 million new sexually transmitted diseases ( STDs) every year in the US, making STD infection a very serious health problem. The CDC's recently released Sexually Transmitted Disease Surveillance 2010 presents statistics and trends on chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and other STDs in the US through 2010. This annual publication is intended as a reference document for policy makers, program managers, health planners, researchers, and others who are concerned with the public health implications of these diseases. A summary of highlights from the report is also available. |

Now Available: New Site to Prevent Unplanned Pregnancy, Bedsider.org |
The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy has launched a new and innovative advertising campaign, in conjuction with the launch of Bedsider.org, aimed at reducing high rates of unplanned pregnancy among young women by encouraging them to find the best method of birth control for their individual lifestyle. The PSAs direct women to Bedsider.org, where they can explore and compare various birth control methods, watch videos of real women describing their personal experiences with each method, and set up birth control and health care appointment reminders to be sent by text or email. |
 | HRSA Issues 2011 Report on US Women's Health |
The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) recently issued the tenth edition of the Women's Health USA data book. Women's Health USA 2011 includes an annual profile of women's health and discusses topics such as health-related quality of life, preconception health, oral health care, preventive health care disparities, violence against women, and barriers to health care. The health of lesbian and bisexual women, as well as American Indian and Alaska Native women are featured, and disparities by sex, race and ethnicity are also highlighted. The data indicate that historically underserved sub-populations of women are at increased risk for multiple negative health outcomes. |

NCC Evaluation Complete |
The Health Services Research and Evaluation Branch in the Division of STD Prevention at CDC recently evaluated the National Chlamydia Coalition (NCC) and gave it a favorable review. Using an online survey and key informant interviews, CDC found that the NCC increased engagement in and the priority for chlamydia screening and treatment among NCC members, was responsible for developing products that would not have otherwise been developed, and made other positive achievements--such as the inclusion of chlamydia screening as part of HEDIS--in a short period of time. |
 | New Child Trends Data Released |
The 2011 issue of Child Trends' Child Indicator newsletter was recently released. This issue provides a roundup of recent updates to key national reports, including the 2011 Kids Count data book. The Fall Child Indicator also highlights three new reports on unintended pregnancy; national data on children and adolescents daily experiences including television usage and type of child care; data on US students' subject-area knowledge, and a roundup of global child indicator news. |
 | NACCHO Seeking Applications from Local Health Departments on STD Prevention and Control Programs |
The National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) is currently seeking applications from local health departments to share stories, lessons learned, tools, and resources from their experiences developing or adapting innovative STD prevention and control programs with community partners, which may include school-based health centers, pharmacies, faith organizations, and others. Materials from NCSD Congressional Briefing on Adolescent Sexual Health Available |
On November 10, 2011, the National Coalition of STD Directors (NCSD) held a Congressional Briefing entitled "Getting Through the Teen Years: Preventing Teen Pregnancy and STDs/HIV" to address the state of adolescent health and the importance of federal investments that provide teens with the tools to safely navigate adolescence and prepare for a healthy adulthood. Materials from the briefing are now available. |
 | Women's Health Issues Supplement Released to Address Needs of Women Affected by HIV Epidemic | The Women's Health Issues journal just released a special supplement that provide s peer-reviewed articles and commentaries about women and girls at risk for or with HIV/AIDS and recommendations for national policy and program improvements to meet their needs. It features articles on prevention and risk reduction, care and treatment, violence prevention, reproductive and sexual health, human rights, criminal justice issues, and population-specific perspectives. |
