Research Article of the Month
Chlamydia Screening and Pelvic Inflammatory Disease: Insights from Exploratory Time-Series AnalysesUsing health claims data from over 200,000 women continuously enrolled in health plans from 2001 to 2006, researchers examined whether changes in monthly chlamydia and gonorrhea screening rates were associated with subsequent changes in PID diagnosis rates. The analysis found that increases in screening rates in a given month were associated with decreases in PID diagnosis rates four months later. These results suggest there are benefits from increases in chlamydia and gonorrhea screening in terms of reducing PID. For a detailed summary of study findings, click here.
Study Finds Chlamydia Treated Sooner When Doctors Use Electronic Medical Records A study in the May issue of Sexually Transmitted Infections found that the use of electronic medical records dramatically reduced the amount of time taken to recall and treat a patient after a positive chlamydia diagnosis. The study examined the records of 100 patients at a sexual health clinic who were treated for chlamydia infection either before or after the clinic stopped using paper records. With electronic records, the median time taken to treat a patient fell by 11.5 days, and the proportion of patients treated within 2 weeks of a positive result rose from 38% to 94%. |
