David and Little Buddy, Christian M. |
Hello! As the new Executive Director of the Buddy Program, I wanted to reach out and thank you, our community of supporters, for your continued interest and support. If you are reading this, you obviously care about the youth in our community, and know how important the work of the Buddy Program is!
I am very excited to be working at the Buddy Program. In my first few weeks here, it is already apparent what a vibrant and well-respected organization this is. Everyone that I meet in the Valley has great things to say about the program, and has welcomed me enthusiastically. We have a great staff, and the programs that we administer are very well run.
I am also excited about attending my first Buddy 5 Mile Race and Bash for the Buddies this summer! The Race will be on Wednesday, July 4th, and the Bash for the Buddies on Friday, July 6th. This year the Bash will take place at the home of Bob and Soledad Hurst on McLain Flats. If you haven't already purchased your tickets, please do so - the Bash has sold out in recent years!

Youth Camp Needs YOUR Support
 | |
2011 Youth Camp Participants |
Youth Camp, taking place in Moab, Utah June 9th - 13th is truly a unique opportunity for our Valley's youth to participate in activities that encourage building leadership skills, trust, life-skills and self-esteem, while experiencing new activities such as climbing, rafting, rappelling, canyoneering and camping, all for FREE! YOU can help cover some of these costs by underwriting the cost of one van rental or simply making a donation towards the rental of these vehicles. Each van costs us $1000 for a 5-day week for rental and insurance and we need four vans. Please help us in keeping this incredible experience free to our participants by making a charitable contribution towards our overhead transportation costs. Every dollar makes a difference in the number of youth that we can serve!

New Study by the Search Institute Calls for
Increased Financial Literacy Education
 | |
Lupita O. on 2011 Lemonade Day |
According to recent studies conducted by experts across the country, today's youth are entering a financial world quite different from previous generations. What's more, young people will be increasingly responsible for saving for their own retirement, medical costs, and other major expenses further complicated by a growing income gap that makes navigating the world of finances even more challenging. These issues have led experts to actively promote financial literacy as crucial to young people's futures.
The Buddy Program is currently engaged with promoting financial literacy and entrepreneurship through a new program called Lemonade Day. This program teaches youth how to own and operate their own lemonade stand business, a simple concept enhanced by a 14-step learning process.

Awarded $37,000 in Continuing Education Scholarships
to 14 of our Youth Participants
 | |
Peter & Egbert in 2003 |
In addition to providing scholarships for extracurricular activities to keep youth active after school and on the weekends, the Buddy Program also offers continuing education scholarships to youth in our programs. Due to the gracious support of our donors, the Buddy Program awarded $37,000 to 14 very impressive high school seniors to go towards their continuing education. One of the applicants, Egbert O. writes:
"When I was younger I used to be really shy, and really uncertain of myself. When I was eight years old I was paired with an older buddy from the community, Peter Waanders. I was so nervous to meet him, and I didn't think I was going to like him; he is still my buddy to this day. By spending time with my Big Buddy and doing things with him I became less shy, and less uncertain of myself. It is incredible to see those changes in my own life and to affect another person's life in a similar way."
