Ideas for You to Help our Youth Thrive
| | Elizabeth Key & Jessica V. |
The Buddy Program not only tries to give our Big Buddies tools and resources to be the best mentors possible, but we want to support our Little Buddies' parents and families as well. Across the nation, there is an initiative to ignite a child's "spark." According to the Search Institute, "A spark is something that gives a person's life meaning and purpose, and discovering and nurturing teenagers' sparks helps them succeed." Here is a tip for parents to help their child find their spark:
- Find opportunities to encourage your child when they seem to really enjoy or excel at an activity. Ask them what they enjoy particularly most about it and LISTEN.
- Click here to read more parenting tips and ways to ignite the spark in your child!
For volunteer mentors, you have an influential impact as well in helping your Little Buddy THRIVE. Read about how you can CHAMPION YOUR LITTLE BUDDY'S SPARK! |

Buddies Get Involved in National Lemonade Day
The Buddy Program is proud to announce that a few of our Buddy Pairs are getting involved in 2011 National Lemonade Day on Sunday, May 1st. Lemonade Day is a national and free community-wide educational program designed to teach youth how to start, own and operate their own business - a lemonade stand.
Through this experience with their Big Buddy, our Little Buddies will learn essential ingredients to helping the child THRIVE:
- set goals
and make a plan for success - find investors
- advertise their product
- purchase supplies and build the stand
- make the product
- serve their customers
- give a portion of the proceeds back to a charity in the community of their choice.
Inspired by part-time Aspen resident and philanthropist, Michael Holthouse, Lemonade Day was developed by Holthouse's non-profit, Prepared 4 Life, an organization in Houston committed to giving youth the opportunity to positively impact their communities. It strives to address an invaluable aspect of our youth learning entrepreneurship. Our Buddy Pairs will host lemonade stands in front of Vectra Bank in Aspen, City Market in El Jebel, and others spots. Please come out and support our local youth and the community by purchasing delicious lemonade on May 1st! For more information on how you can champion this endeavor and find a lemonade stand closest to you, please contact Heather Hicks at heather@buddyprogram.org or visit the Lemonade Day website:www.lemonadeday.org. |

Seeking Latino Youth Camp Volunteer Counselors
The Buddy Program is seeking a few GREAT male Experiential Counselor Volunteers for our Latino Youth Camp from June 10th through June 14th, 2011. Evenings are structured around teambuilding activities, communication, trust-building, decision-making workshops, and intense "Rap Sessions" led by trained facilitators. In this position, the volunteer will serve as the primary adult responsible for supervision of youth participants and to assist the Buddy Program staff in implementing the program (including transporting youth to/from activities, physical activities, daily living skills, health and safety).
