Buddy Pair Success Story: Jenny and Caroline
In the fall of 2008, Jenny and Caroline were matched as Buddies in the Buddy Program. Caroline's mother approached the Buddy Program for a Buddy for her daughter as Caroline was transitioning into high school, and her mother was concerned about her social needs as well as her self-esteem. While Caroline's family is active and involved in their daughter's life, they recognized that another caring adult in Caroline's life would help make this transition a bit easier. Caroline, an aspiring romance novel writer wanted a woman to do "girly" things with.
Jenny, a young woman who moved to the Roaring Fork Valley in 2005, sought out the Buddy Program as she wanted to connect with a young person after moving far away from family her family. Jenny's passion for helping others and her kind, caring demeanor and sense of humor makes her the perfect Big Buddy. Jenny was a perfect match and a trusting bond was soon formed.
One year after being matched, the two have already been through many life events. Jenny's job took her to a new community, but despite the commute, she has stayed committed to Caroline. After Jenny taught her how to bowl, Caroline participated in the Colorado Special Olympics competition, and she placed 3rd! Caroline told Jenny, that "because of you and the patience that you have taught me, I was able to place!"
Her parents acknowledge this relationship and the difference it has made in their daughter's life as well: "Jenny brings out the best in Caroline; they share special events, girly stuff and secrets, and always have a lot of fun. Thank you, Jenny and the Buddy Program!" |
Scholarships for our Little Buddies
The Buddy Program is fortunate to be able to provide financial assistance in the form of scholarships to Little Buddies twice during the year because of supporters like you. These scholarships allow Little Buddies to participate in community sports and activities that increase their self-esteem, generate greater interest in school, and build a better sense of awareness of the world around them. We are pleased to announce that the number of applications increased by 26% this scholarship season. Little Buddies applied for scholarships towards Aspen Valley Ski Club, Boys Scouts, and Aspen Jr. Hockey, among others. In a recent request for a scholarship, a Little Buddy wrote: "When I snowboard, I feel like I am free of all my problems and I enter a new world, in which all my problems are fixed and I am happy again. I feel like I can do anything I want!" | |
