Bring Your Buddy to Work Week Activity
During the week of August 10th, Buddy Pairs participated in a career-related activity where Big Buddies invited their Little Buddy to their workplace to shadow them as they do their job and to provide the Little Buddy with an up-close look at the world of work. One of our Big Buddies, Kristin, discovered that her Little Buddy, Veronica, has a real fashion interest. Upon bringing her into her interior design office, they received a visit from some Industry Reps that were showing their new fall collections. "She (Veronica) jumped right in and really impressed me," says Kristin. "It was right up her alley!"
Another Buddy Pair, Kelly and Erika, wrote us about their experience: Little Buddy, Erika wrote: "It was so fun being here with Kelly. It was my second time but I still had as much fun as I did the last time hanging out here." "It was great having Erika spend time at work with me again. I got to show her a few new things. She's becoming an expert at making reservations in the software that I support and she even got to take part in a wadded-up paper war with my co-workers!" recounts Big Buddy, Kelly.

Buddy Pairs Play Mini-Golf
On Wednesday, Aug. 5, The Buddy Program organized a fun recreational activity for Big and Little Buddies: mini-golf! Ten Buddy Pairs attended this activity that took place at Crazy Creeks Mini-Golf in Glenwood Springs. The event, including the miniature golf and the delicious pizzas, was a big success. It was great to see the spirited yet good-natured competition among Big and Little Buddies. There were lots of smiles, laughs, and even some holes in one! The Buddy Program would like to extend a special thank-you to Myka and Jim Yellico at Crazy Creeks Mini-Golf for a memorable afternoon. Our gratitude also goes to all of our wonderful Big Buddies for helping us strengthen our community by guiding and inspiring youth through mentoring. Clark's Market Cash Saver Program benefiting The Buddy Program
Clark's Market on Mill Street in Aspen is teaming up with The Buddy Program with their Cash Saver Program in the upcoming week. This is a fantastic way to support our mentoring programs. Some nonprofits earn a thousand dollars or more, so please shop often at Clark's Market between Sunday, August 30th - Saturday, September 5th.
Here's how it works: Every time you spend $30, you will get a $1 Cash Saver Coupon which can be used for a select few items on display in Clark's Market OR can be put in the Cash Saver Box, located on the wall by the shopping carts, which donates 50 cents to The Buddy Program. These coupons will not be given out automatically. You must ask to use a cash saver number and make up a 4 digit number that you use every time you shop. It's easy to sign up for, they just ask for the last 4 digits of your phone number. Every time you spend $30, you will get a coupon to put in the box but only if you ask for it. For example, if you use your 4 digit code and spend $20 today and then $10 tomorrow, then you would get a coupon tomorrow because you have reached $30. Your dollars roll over to the next time you shop.
Please support our community's youth through mentoring by shopping at Clark's Market during the week of Sunday, August 30th - Saturday, September 5th. Thank you! |
Famous Mentor...
Among his many distinguished accomplishments, the late Senator Edward M. Kennedy was a champion of advocating national and community service for decades. Not only was he a leader in passing many critical pieces of legislation such as the National and Community Service Act of 1990, the National and Community Service Trust Act in 1993 and most recently, the Serve America Act in 2009, he was a perfect example of how to give back to his local Washington, D.C. community: he was a mentor to Jasmine Harrison. Senator Kennedy was a reading mentor in the Everybody Wins! Power Lunch program. Every Tuesday, for over five years, the Senator would drive to Jasmine's elementary school and read with her. While inspiring her to read, he was making a difference in her life. Now, Jasmine is an Education Major at Virginia Commonwealth University. In 2008 at the Democratic Convention, Jasmine explained that their mentoring relationship impacted her life, and she lives by his advice: "Stay focused, keep my eyes on the prize, maybe not in those words, but do what I have to do and get it done" (http://www.wjla.com/news/stories/0808/547803.html.) The Buddy Program sincerely salutes Senator Kennedy for his service as an influential mentor, a "lion" in our Congress, and as President Obama has recently said, "For America, he was the defender of a dream."
