New Hires Expand Foreign Language Tutoring Services
We are excited to announce the addition of two new tutors that will help the continued improvement of our foreign language tutoring capabilities. In the past month, Noelle Ghoussaini and Paull Randt joined the Private Prep team as French and Mandarin tutors, respectively. We are confident that Noelle and Paull are not only terrific tutors, but also bring a fascinating perspective to their lessons.

PaullPaull was born and raised in China, by two Californian parents. Paull studied Mandarin at international schools in Hong Kong and Beijing throughout his childhood. His interests in China and Mandarin continued through his high school and college years at Phillips Academy Andover and Yale University. Paull currently lives in New York and works during the day as a research assistant at the Council on Foreign Relations. His research focuses on the Chinese government's foreign and energy policies.

"My interest in tutoring stems from working with children and adults in a variety of educational situations during high school and college. I understand the particular challenges that native English-speakers face when learning the language. I also have years of insight into Chinese culture, which is essential to learning Mandarin. I am excited to continue sharing my passion for China with students."

NoelleNoelle grew up as a Lebanese American in both the US and Europe. While attending international schools Noelle had the opportunity to learn about a variety of cultures. From a young age she was surrounded by many different languages including French, Arabic, German, Spanish, and Italian. Noelle started learning French at the age of three, German at the age of ten and is currently learning Spanish. That being said, Noelle has always had a particular passion for French.

"Speaking French has opened up many doors in my life, from living in Mali where French is the national language, to interning with a theatre company in France, to teaching French at an International School in Brooklyn. In today's globalized world, knowing various languages is an asset to any individual. In tutoring and teaching French, I hope to open doors to youth who are excited about the prospect of learning a new language and eager to explore the unknown."

Noelle is a graduate of Northwestern University with a double major in Performance Studies and French.

When it Comes to Studying, Practice Tests Make Perfect
LogoOne aspect of Private Prep's tutoring approach is to encourage students to practice test taking. We advocate that our tutors replicate the pressures of taking timed tests and the type of questions students may encounter on upcoming exams. This approach not only benefits students in preparation for upcoming tests, but we believe it is also a highly effective learning tool. Our practice based approach is applicable to subject based course work in addition to standardized test preparation.

Findings from a recent study by psychologists from Purdue and Washington University and summarized in the Monitor on Psychology reinforces the benefits of this approach. A team of psychologists found that students who were repeatedly tested on material significantly outperformed those who repeatedly studied it. According to Jeff Karpicke (PHD from Purdue) testing may work better than straight-up studying because remembering is a skill that takes practice. "When people are practicing memory retrieval while they're learning, they're practicing the same skill they'll need to recall the information on a later test," Dr. Karpicke explained.

Taking practice tests as study tool is a common aspect for most standardized test preparation programs, Private Prep included. It takes more creativity to practice test taking for course work. With that in mind, here are three strategies we recommend to help practice in preparation for upcoming tests:
  • Note cards can be a great study tool. You can also use them to practice test taking. Have practice questions on the front and possible answers on the back. Be sure to practice all of the questions repeatedly, not just the questions you get wrong. Try using the note cards with a time limit and a separate piece of paper to write out your answers.
  • For cumulative exams, retake past tests and quizzes. This is a great way to review older content and become more familiar with the type of questions a teacher will use on a test. It will also help you get a better feel for the amount of material covered in an allotted amount of time and set an appropriate pace.
  • Create practice tests. Try to anticipate the questions that would be on your test. Use past tests and homework assignments to find the type of questions and material covered on your test. The process of creating a practice test is a useful study tool, in addition to the actual practice of taking a test under time constraints.

We remain excited about the direction Private Prep is headed as we strive to improve the quality of our tutoring. That being said, we know there is always room for improvement and are grateful of any ideas or feedback we receive.
