Halloween Pub Night, Fall Supper in Fox Valley Well Attended
partyThe Fox Valley Recreation Board held a Halloween pub night at the curling rink on Saturday, October 31. The upstairs of the curling rink was comfortably full of party goers. Not very many people dressed up, but the ones who did had excellent costumes. The winners of the best costumes were Lori Ries as Octomom and Derrick Getz as the Cookie Monster. Jordan Koch did a great job as D.J. and the members of the Rec Board served delicious food; chicken wings, battered mushrooms, sausage on a bun, and party platters.

On Sunday, November 1, the CWL held their annual fall supper and Bingo. There was plenty of food for the large crowd that turned out.
After supper, everyone got their Bingo cards and played 20 games of Bingo, two of them blackouts. Many businesses in Fox Valley, Leader and Maple Creek provided prizes for the evening. The grade 12 class from Fox Valley School called the numbers and acted as runners. At the end of the evening the winners of the CWL raffle prizes were drawn. Winners were:bingo
first prize (Snowman donated by the CWL) Shirley Greenwald, second prize ($100 from the Fox Valley branch of the Cypress Credit Union) Shannon Bakanec, third prize (glass angel donated by the CWL) John T. Hudec, fourth prize ($40 from Schmaltz Insurance) Shaelyn Bakanec, and 5th prize (glass paperweight donated by the CWL and a gift certificate from the Valley Oasis Restaurant) Leo M. Schneider.

It was a busy weekend for volleyball on October 30 and 31. The senior boys went to Abbey. Cabri, Leader, and Frontier also participated. Fox Valley defeated Cabri in the semi-final and Abbey in the final to take home the gold. The senior girls traveled to Consul where they took part in a tournament with Consul, Shaunavon, Cabri, Bengough, and Abbey. They were successful against Shaunavon in the semi-final but lost to Consul (28-26 and 25-19) winning the silver. The junior boys went to sectionals in Success. Other teams there were Hazlet, Leader, and Cabri. Fox Valley won all their matches and were first in the round robin pool. There was no final. Fox Valley will be
going to districts in 1st place. The junior girls played in Hazlet.  There were two pools; Maple Creek, Cabri, and Hazlet and Fox Valley, Success, and Leader. Maple Creek and Fox Valley came out top of their pools. Fox Valley met Cabri in the semi-final and won the final against Maple Creek (25-10, 25-10). Both teams are going to districts in Frontier.

Report from the Legislature   6 November 2009
WORK BEGINS ON REDUCING SURGICAL WAIT TIMES
For far too long, Saskatchewan people who needed surgery had to wait months, maybe even years, to get their procedure.   Not anymore.
Acting on our government's bold new goal to reduce surgical waiting times to three months or less, we have announced a surgical working group, made up of representatives from the Ministry of Health, health regions and people who provide healthcare.   This group has been asked to develop a plan that will:

  • improve the experience of Saskatchewan surgical patients;
  • eliminate the backlog of people waiting for surgical care; and
  • achieve the government's goal of reducing surgical wait times to no more than three months within four years.
The formation of the surgical working group is in response to the recently-released Patients First report.   Patients will soon be added to this working group in order to ensure that the plan really does put patients first.

SASKATCHEWAN PROVIDES LEADERSHIP ON H1N1 VACCINATIONS
As H1N1 vaccination clinics, now focusing on small children and pregnant women, continue across Saskatchewan, other provinces are moving to follow our model.
By rolling out the vaccine in stages, Saskatchewan people have largely avoided the huge lineups being experienced in places like Alberta and Ontario.   Not only are people waiting for hours in other jurisdictions, sometimes they get to the front of the line to be told there's no more vaccine.
In the weeks to come, there will be vaccine clinics for other high risk groups, followed by clinics for the general public.   For the most up-to-date information, either go to the Cypress Health Region's website, www.cypresshealth.ca, or give them a call.

remembrance dayLet Us Never Forget - Remembrance Day - November 11, 2009

The farther we get in time from the world wars of the 20th century the easier it gets to forget the horror and sacrifice that men and women of Canada faced in an attempt to keep our country free and safe from totalitarian rule. Most of my generation, and more youthful since, have never had to face a world where armies of invasion and occupation took over neighbouring countries and imposed such fear and anguish. We have never known the terror of being persecuted, tortured and killed as did the Jews, Romas, disabled and others in occupied Europe in the 1930's and 1940's under the Nazis and Fascists. Today we have an armed force that is sent to far away lands to help protect people we do not know and cultures we do not understand from that same totalitarian rule. Let us all pledge to never forget the past and current sacrifices that have been made so that we can live in safety and freedom. Let's carry to our young people the knowledge and gratitude for the magnificent gift of our free democracy that has been given to us by so many.

In Flanders Fields
by John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
