 Homes of Hope Mission Complete
Fox Valley participants in the Homes of Hope Mission to build a school in San Quintin, Mexico, came home full of enthusiasm about their experience. Brianna Napper, Caitlin Buye, Ron Buye, Courtney Bosch, and Kerry Bakanec went from Fox Valley. The mission was led by Harold and Pearl Plato from Hope Church in Burstall and 37 people in all  took part. The group built a school in four days. They worked until about 8 pm each night except the first when they were rained out about 4:00. Highlights of the 35 hour bus trip (each way) included seeing the strip in Las Vegas, visiting LaBoufadora which is a marketplace full of kiosks selling clothing, jewelry etc., seeing the ocean from the Habana Banana restaurant, eating amazing food, and stopping at Disneyland on the way home.

On February 20, 21, and 22, Fox Valley hosted its annual Rec Hockey Tourney. Participating teams were: Fox Valley, Sab's Saloon, Petro Dogs, Medicine Hat, Richmound, and Burstall. The final saw Fox Valley defeating Medicine Hat 7-6. The Rec Hockey team would like to thank the grade twelves and their parents for running the canteen.
The FRBL Apache Midget Blues entered the second round of playoffs in Fox Valley on Thursday, February 26th. They defeated Glentworth 7-3.hockey

A number of people from Fox Valley were able to attend the Purity Rally at Holy Cross High School in Saskatoon on the weekend of February 20th. The Purity Rally is an annual event, organized by Carmen Marcoux, a local author, and her crew - a mix of her own extended family and numerous other teens.  It was an awesome event. The main speaker was Fr. Clair Watrin, founder of Live-in Retreats.  He is a captivating speaker and is, at present, chaplain of JP II Bible College in Radway, Alberta. This is a very family-friendly event every year. There are programs for 4-7 year-olds, and for 8-11 year-olds, while everyone 12 and up is welcome to stay for the talks. It is always held on the last Saturday before Ash Wednesday. Anyone interested in further information can check out courtshipnow.com.

Braden Buye, son of Gwen and Daniel Buye, has received an MIAC Scholarship. This scholarship is  the Alberta Chamber of Resouces Award in Mining Engineering. It is awarded on both academic merit and extra-curricular involvement/achievements for second-year undergraduate students enroled in the University of Alberta Faculty of Engineering's School of Mining. The ten scholarships of $2,000 are sponsored by the mining companies in the Alberta Chamber of Resouces. In addition to having outstanding marks, Braden is a multi-sport athlete, excelling in hockey, football, rugby, and baseball.

The R.M. of Fox Valley held their annual supper and meeting on Thursday, February 26th. The Valley Oasis Restaurant catered the meal for 70 people. After the supper, there was an informational meeting regarding Downy and Japanese Brome.

We would like to extend our sympathies to Donna Neigum and her family on the passing of her mother Mary Schneider.

Small is still Beautiful
A book review by Joanne Hudec
In these days of huge corporations, it is interesting to study the economic trends and observe how they affect small family businesses such as farming.
Joseph Pearce, in his book small is still beautiful, which is an updated version of  E. F. Schumacher's small is beautiful, gives us a very lucid description of today's world economics and how it affects family life and small private enterprise.
In his book, Pearce notes "The problem is that economic growth, as measured by the increase in the gross national product, has precious little to do with people's wealth or well-being  It merely records activity.  If a major calamity occurs, such as a hurricane or an earthquake, there might be a growth in Gross National Product because activity is increased to repair the damage. . . if the crime rate increases, GNP records economic growth because more people are employed in the police force, more prisons are built, and more is spent on insurance and personal security. . . billions of dollars are made by tobacco companies , and by the governments in the levying of taxes on cigarettes.  Both contribute enormously to growth in GNP and, therefore,  to the economic welfare of the community. . . the cost of cancer in the U.S. alone was estimated at $110 billion per annum . . . the construction of new hospitals and the employment of public health workers all add to the GNP, making us 'wealthier.'"  One wonders whether the economists will all be miserable when we discover a cure for cancer.
It is also, according to economists, very bad for us when we take care of the elderly and the sick in our homes, instead of putting them into institutions, because the loss of revenue decreases the GNP.
It would seem that our whole way of life has to change, if we are here to serve the Gross National Product.  We must never grow our own food, take care of our own family members, walk to work, run our own family businesses, or take care of simple ailments at home.
Joseph Pearce's point is an excellent one.  What if small is really better?  What if it would be better for us if we could run our own family farm, hand it down to our children intact, offer to exchange goods with neighbors in need, look after one another on a personal level and do business with persons instead of corporations?  What if we could live a quiet life, work diligently, earn an honest living and spend time with friends, own our own homes and not have to be preoccupied with making ends meet?  I believe that anything that is better for persons is much more likely to last, as evidenced by our collapsing economy.
Small is still beautiful by Joseph Pearce is available through isibooks.org
