Dear fellow supporter of the arts,

Well, Art Sandy Springs has so many fabulous things going on I hardly know where to start. We have been busy with our Member Events; read on to see what good times we have had and to learn about our next event at Spivey Hall.  In December we helped the City launch the first "Sparkle Sandy Springs" holiday celebration. Last week we sent an exciting announcement unveiling the truly astonishing winners of our sculpture competition for the Playable Art Park.  ArtSSpring planning is almost complete; you'll see a preview of our jam-packed calendar in the following pages.  And our "Flowers for the City" team has updated and upgraded the Roswell Road Planters and Library Reading Garden.  So get a cup of hot tea, curl up and read about our many accomplishments. If you are not yet a member, please do join. We put the dues money to very good use bringing beauty to our city, and we have a grand time doing it.

Warmest regards,

Cheri Morris, President

3 Inspirational Tenors
The 3 inspirational tenors will delight audiences at this year's ArtSSpring.

Building on the splendid success of 2011, ArtSSpring 2012 is off and running, scheduled for April 13 to May 13. There are grand plans!

Once again, Sandy Springs galleries, restaurants, theaters, churches, sidewalks, the Sandy Springs Library, stores and parks will be the scenes of theatrical performances, all manner of musical happening from cool jazz to chamber music and culinary masterpieces, to art extravaganzas and literary happenings.

Here are just a few of the main events available to you during this fun-filled, bountiful month long celebration of the arts!

1. ArtSSpring will make its grand entrance in fine fashion at the Bows ArtSS Bash, a razzle-dazzle evening of original art,  sumptuous food, and glorious musical offerings, held at Motorcars of Georgia, where Lamborghini and Aston Martins set the stage. Get ready for a big time celebration. See the article below for details!

2. Save Thursday evenings for local gallery openings featuring the best artists in the region, enjoying wine and cheese at Huff Harrington Fine Art, artists at work at The Frame Source Gallery, fine artwork and incredible edibles at A Royal Affair Cafe, and a contemporary angle on Old World Art at di Domizio's Grand Opening Gala.

3. Spend a spring afternoon at the Artist Market at Congregation B'nai Torah, featuring Atlanta artists selling multi-media paintings, pottery, jewelry, fabric art and upscale crafts. Make Art in the Park with the kids, fashioning art projects out of recycled objects and finds collected on the nature trail, sponsored by Keeping North Fulton Beautiful and Sandy Springs Conservancy in conjunction with Leadership Sandy Springs.

 4. You will not want to miss the "3 Inspirational Tenors", friends and classically trained tenors who have performed their repertoire of beloved hymns and classics at the Basilica of St. Peter in Rome as well as here in Atlanta.

5. Go out on the town for Act 3's production of Steel Magnolias,a moving and funny story of six small-town Louisiana women, playing two weekends of ArtSSpring. Plus, the always agile Theatre-To-Go again delivers witty, charming  pieces, including a 50's style musical.

6. String players from the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra take the stage when Franklin Pond Chamber Music performs, and duo pianists Priscilla and Keith Jefcoat tackle the mighty Yamaha with four hands and a powerful spirit.

7. For a quieter moment, curl up with a book at the first annual Sandy Springs Reads sponsored by the Sandy Springs Library, Friends of the Sandy Springs Library (FOSSL) and the Sandy Springs Education Force.

Bean Head Toys Wins Sparkle Sandy Springs

Bean Head Toys' mixture of elves and gingerbread men, white lights and "toy" magic earned the Sandy Springs local toy store first prize in the first annual "Sparkle Sandy Springs" contest.

Sparkle Sandy Springs is a competition awarding the best holiday display  window within the Sandy Springs city limits, conducted in collaboration with Art Sandy Springs, the Sandy Springs Perimeter Chamber of Commerce, Sandy Springs Hospitality and Tourism, the Sandy Springs Design Center, and the City of Sandy Springs.

Bean Head Toys earns first prize for its holiday display window.

"It was great fun seeing the holiday spirit among our Sandy Springs businesses owners," said Deirdre Brock, an executive board member of Art Sandy Springs, who led the judging efforts. "Everyone did a great job. It was a close competition, but Bean Head Toys scored consistently on top in each of our judging criteria."

"We are so excited," said Chris Lowe, owner of Bean Head Toys. "I would have screamed, but I had customers in the store!"

Registrants were scored based on creativity and originality, best expression of theme, best use of lighting, best use of available space and overall design quality and presentation. Cornerstone Bank was selected for second place in overall judging. Receiving honorable mentions were CalyRoad Creamery in the category of creativity and originality, Phidippides for best expression of theme, and Mirage Persian Cuisine for best use of lighting.

Bean Head Toys was presented its $1,000 cash prize at the Sandy Springs/Perimeter Chamber of Commerce holiday gathering on December 15.

Reading Garden Gets Some TLC

BNKJ Volunteer Team
BNKJ volunteers stop for a quick photo. Thanks team for keeping our Reading Garden beautiful!

Next to the Sandy Springs Library Lawn is what some Sandy Springers consider a hidden gem-the Reading Garden, created by ArtSS on land donated to the Library by the Sandy Springs Women's Club.  The Garden is a great place for our citizens to visit, and just settle down on a bench or tree trunk with a good book,  surrounded by flowers and shrubs and trees, enjoying nature.

This fall the accounting and consulting firm Babush, Neiman, Kornman & Johnson, LLP (BNKJ), which is in the Palisades business complex in Sandy Springs, chose the Reading Garden as one of its Community Outreach projects. The  employees gathered one fall day at the Garden with hoes and blowers and rakes and other yard supplies and went to work to keep the Garden beautiful.

BNKJ has committed to quarterly upkeep of the Garden, but more volunteers are needed. If you and/or your company would like to help,. please contact Laura Jones at lauraj@mindspring.com.
