Playable Art Park Winners Unveiled!

We are absolutely thrilled to announce that at the January 17 Sandy Springs Council Meeting, six pieces of original, permanent, interactive works of art were gifted to and accepted by the City of Sandy Springs from a joint venture of the Sandy Springs Conservancy and Art Sandy Springs. The Playable Art Park Steering Committee continues to lead and coordinate this project after the Sculpture Competition among worldwide artists held in the fall of 2011.

The six sculptures will be constructed through a generous grant from Northside Hospital and find a home at the Playable Art Park at Abernathy Greenway to inspire active play for children ages 5-12.  The City of Sandy Springs will be receiving the completed sculptures and installing them in the Greenway for the community to enjoy by Fall 2012.

After the Playable Art Park blue-ribbon panel of judges selected these finalists, the Steering Committee is busy enthusiastically bringing all the details together in the months ahead for the installation.  The great challenge of selection of the amazing winners fell to some of the Southeast's most esteemed specialists in art and design:

  • Dr. Jerry Cullum, Retired Senior Editor of "Art Papers" magazine
  • Cynthia Gentry, Founder the Atlanta Taskforce on Play (ATOP) in 2006
  • Cathleen Hunt, Manager of Exhibitions Program at the Atlanta Botanical Garden
  • Susan Krause, Chair of Sculpture for Savannah College of Art and Design, Atlanta.
  • Michelle Savant, Associate Conservator of Objects for the High Museum of Art.

Linda Bain, Chair of the Steering Committee, said "this is a culmination of our year long effort to seeing children play among and around these terrific sculptures and the Steering Committee is overjoyed with the City acceptance and with all parties involved."

The Sandy Springs Council members described the Playable Art Park project and the winning sculptures as "unbelievable quality" and "beyond their imagination." They commended the credential of jurors and were excited about announcing the spectacular winners of this elaborate display of sculptures for children to the public and world wide community.

Once installed, The Playable Art Park will provide Sandy Springs children a new place and a unique, new way to play!
