Beverly International E-Newsletter #12

UMP is back in Stock!!!

Yesterday, we finally received our first truck shipment of our most desired UMP Vanilla! We sold so many in January that our labs just couldn't keep up with the pace!

We were selling it faster than Usain Bolt can run 100 meters in 9.58 seconds! It was literally flying out the door.

Since we first had to say,"Sorry, we are out of UMP", we produced piles of back orders that could have filled an Olympic size swimming pool. They just kept growing! (Maybe not that many, close.)

Roger, me and the staff were just drowning in stress over your empty bottles of UMP. We all want to say that we can empathize. We take it ourselves... everyday.

Going with out it sure makes one appreciate the UMP product! Now that we have it back in, we hope that you have not forgotten about us. That creamy wonderful protein flavor is calling your name!

Better get on the horn and give us a shout!!! We will be glad to have your fresh batch of UMP delivered to your door ASAP!!! Thanks for hangin' with us during this time.

2011 Northern Kentucky

We once again promoted the NPC 2011 Northern Kentucky Bodybuilding, Figure, and Bikini Championship. The show was a great success. 255 athletes, 2500 in the audience, everything on-time - from check-in - to prejudging - to the evening finals, and $25,000 donated again this year to the Shriners Hospital for Children.

Feedback from a 1st time competitor

"First of all, I'd like to thank you for putting on such a great event.  For a first timer like me, it was great that you had a whole support group of people to help guide me through the process. It is obvious that you and your husband put a significant amount of time into this to make it efficient and as easy for the competitors as possible.  I was treated so nicely every step along the way, and I just wanted to let you know that from someone who needed A LOT of HELP!" - Lisa Harlan, 1st-time female bodybuilder - THIRD PLACE!  YEAH!!!"

2011 Northern Kentucky Results are here.

Looking for Inspiration?  Be part of a community.

An article on brands featured in the January 15-21 issue of The Economist states "...people have a passionate attachment to some brands. They do not merely buy clothes at Gap or coffee at Starbucks, but consider themselves to belong to "communities" defined by what they consume." "[The] more choices people have," the article continues, "the more they seem to value the familiar."

Beverly International turns 44 this year. That's given us plenty of time to acquire street cred -or in our case, gym cred- and a thriving community of support. Besides the things they consume, the members of the BI community are defined by the things they do and the goals they set for themselves, such as working out with unbridled intensity in an effort to build a body that is lean, well muscled and more resistant to aging in all its forms.

There's passion in the BI community, as well as wisdom. You can tap into each today by joining the BI Support Forum, where you'll find free advice plus plenty of inspiration to keep you on track.

Citrulline and Erection Hardness

Are Italians better lovers? Chi lo sa? (Who knows?) Whether it's fact or fiction, this hasn't stopped Italian scientists from trying to find a more natural way to enhance performance in the bedroom. A recent study suggests that the amino acid citrulline (a key compound in Muscle Synergy) isn't a bad place to start.

Citrulline can be converted into arginine, which in turn is used to make nitric oxide (NO), an important regulator of blood flow. Animal and human studies provide evidence that citrulline may actually increase arginine levels better than arginine itself.

Researchers at the University of Foggia in Italy assessed citrulline's ability to enhance erection hardness. They used a single-blind study format, meaning that only the researchers knew whether the subjects were receiving the treatment (citrulline) or the placebo. Twenty-four subjects participated in the study, the average age of which was 56 years. All had mild erectile dysfunction, defined as a rating of 3 on an erection hardness scale. Subjects received a 1.5-gram placebo for one month and 1.5 grams of citrulline for another month. (NOTE: One serving of Muscle Synergy contains 1.6 g of citrulline, as well as 7 g of arginine.)

The results were positive. Half of the men taking citrulline experienced an increase in erection hardness (an increase from 3 to 4 on the hardness scale), as compared to only 2% of those receiving the placebo. Subjects taking citrulline also experienced a significant increase in intercourse frequency. The study was published in January 2011 in volume 77, number 1 of the journal Urology.

Anecdotally, users of Quadracarn (also see Product Spotlight, below) say that it enhances blood flow and vascularity all over the body, as well as libido. Stacking it with Muscle Synergy might well take your sexual performance to the next level. Fare un tentativo. (Give it a try.)

"Cinnamize" your BI protein shakes for even greater health benefits.

Dr. Richard Anderson at the Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center (the USDA's largest such facility) says that taking roughly teaspoon (approx. 1 g) of powdered cinnamon twice per day should be adequate to promote insulin sensitivity and blood glucose regulation. A delicious way to do this is by adding your cinnamon to vanilla Muscle Provider or Ultimate Muscle Protein. Anderson says that any supermarket variety of cinnamon powder will do, as most seem to show activity. Cinnamon may also help support healthy cholesterol levels.

Light Weights = Big Muscles?

To build muscle, you need to lift heavy weights, right? This is something that most people agree on, scientists included. But how heavy is heavy enough? Or, alternatively, what's too light?

The answer is possibly a lot lighter than you think. Newly published research from scientists at McMaster University suggests that lifting loads as light as 30% of 1-repetition maximum (1-RM: the maximum amount of weight you can complete one rep with) can activate cellular signaling pathways associated with muscle hypertrophy, or increases in muscle size, more strongly than much heavier loads.

The McMaster study involved 15 young males who were randomly assigned to two of the following protocols:

90FAIL: Subjects performed 4 sets to failure with 90% of 1-RM.

30WM: Subjects performed 4 sets with 30% of 1-RM "work-matched" to 90FAIL. In other words, the number of reps was adjusted so that the amount of work performed was the same in both conditions.

30FAIL: Subjects performed 4 sets to failure with 30% of 1-RM.

Subjects rested 2 minutes between sets and performed each exercise in a strictly controlled 1:0:1 cadence (i.e. 1 second up, 0 second pause, 1 second down), one leg at a time (e.g. single-leg leg extensions instead of the regular kind). Only the 30FAIL and 90FAIL subjects performed their sets until failure. The average number of reps completed per set in each group was 24 and 5, respectively.

Based on measurements of muscle protein synthesis and the activities of cellular signaling pathways, the 30FAIL proved superior. The authors remarked:

"We conclude that a high intensity-low volume training bout [90FAIL] is inferior to a low intensity-high volume bout [30FAIL] in stimulating an anabolic response. Quantity of work, however, is important even at low intensities. Our data support the notion that a lower intensity-higher volume resistance exercise paradigm [like 30FAIL] may ultimately be more effective in stimulating hypertrophy [increases in muscle size]."

Surprised? Keep in mind that the researchers did not actually measure changes in muscle size. This would require longer-term studies. Still, the data are intriguing, to say the least, and certainly worth using as the basis for conducting your own "30FAIL" workouts.

Many people prefer the feeling -especially the pump- produced by lifting lighter weights for higher reps, not to mention the reduction in stress placed on the joints. Nicholas Burd, PhD, one of the scientists involved in the study, told BI:

"These data are very exciting and simply follow one of the most substantiated principles in physiology: the size principle, which refers to the orderly recruitment of muscle fibers. As you know, it is generally assumed that "trained" individuals require higher loads to see any significant effects (i.e., muscle hypertrophy). The subjects in the study, although not powerlifters, were recreationally resistance trained and responded robustly to the high volume low-load protocol (30FAIL) both at the immediate acute time period (i.e., 4h) and extended time period (i.e., 24h) beyond the exercise bout."

Burd continues:

"It is important to note that the 30FAIL protocol not only induced significant effects on anabolic signaling molecules but also a direct predictor of training induced muscle mass (i.e., myofibrillar protein synthesis). Furthermore, sarcoplasmic protein synthesis (which includes mitochondrial proteins) was superior in 30FAIL, suggesting that this type of training not only improves muscle quality but also oxidative capacity, a benefit that is more commonly associated with aerobic training. As for the responsiveness, the SD's [standard deviations] were very tight, which illustrates that subjects responded very similar. We have some fed-state responses using this exercise paradigm and these findings are equally impressive."

Be forewarned! If you think 30FAIL training is "easy", think again. Burd told BI, "Subjects performed 4 total sets with 2 min rest between each set. I challenge you to set the load on a conventional leg extension equated to 30% 1RM and see how many reps you can get. Remember these guys [the subjects] were recreationally resistance trained, not aerobically trained. Being Type II fiber dominant will kill you!"

With its 5:1:1 ratio of creatine to beta-alanine to phosphates, Creatine Select is sure to produce noticeable gains for those using the 30FAIL method in their workouts.
