Thursday, April 22: Junior 5

An Important Reminder:

We are noticing that parents are not signing their children in and out of the school.  Some parents tell their child to sign themselves in which often does not happen.  Also, some students leave to meet their parents in the parking lot and nobody signs the child out.

This is a very serious issue for us, as we need to know at all times who is in the school.

Please remember to sign your child in and out during the regular school day.

We know you understand how important this is and appreciate your cooperation.  Thank you.

Electronics at Venta
We would like to remind all parents and students that cell phones, IPOD's and any other electronic devices are not allowed at Venta.  If  a student brings any of the above items to school they will be confiscated.

Members of the running club are allowed to use an IPOD during their runs.  However, they have to give the IPOD to Mr. Hopper before and after the run.

Again, thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
Congratulations to Mr. McDonald:
We are pleased to inform you that Aaron McDonald has recently been appointed the Assistant Coach of the Canadian Junior Women's Rugby U-18 squad.  The team recently won a tournament in San Diego against several collegiate schools.  The program is in its first year, so Aaron anticipates great things for "Team Canada".  Congratulations!
Grade 7 and 8 Flag Rugby Team:
On the topic of rugby, Aaron McDonald will soon be starting a flag-rugby team consisting of interested Grade 7 and 8 students.  There are plans for a tournament this spring that will include 40 schools from the public boards.  We will pass on more information as soon as we have it.

Venta Vipers/Junior Running Club/Inter-School Basketball League
VENTA VIPERS:  As part of our acceptance into the NCSSAA the students have voted on a team name - The Venta Vipers! The Vipers compete in Ottawa-wide track and field and running competitions. In order to properly condition the students for the major runs, such as the National Capital Race Weekend, Mr. Spratt has made a running club schedule which can be viewed by clicking on the Venta Viper link in the side-bar. The students do their runs over their lunch hours, as well as on the weekends.

JUNIOR RUNNING CLUB: Misha Costescu and Emily Mosher have started a "Junior Running Club" to compliment our senior Venta Vipers. The club is open to all students in Junior 1 - 4. The students will run the Venta "forest track" which is the 2 km trail around our campus. The primary goal of the club is give our younger students an opportunity to get out, stretch their legs and take in the nature all around the trail. For example, right now, students can see various animals coming out of hibernation. The students will also be accompanied by several volunteer runners from Grades 9 and 10.

INTER-SCHOOL BB LEAGUE:  Misha is also in the process of organizing an inter-school basketball league.  The teams will play two times a week over lunch hour.  Participation is voluntary and it is open to the entire school.
Venta Receives Grant from Ontario Trillium Association:

Venta is pleased to announce that we have been chosen to receive funding from OFSSA (Ontario Federation of Secondary School Athletics) as well as the Ontario Trillium Foundation for our Track and Field programme!

We received $800 to introduce and enhance our track and field activities. Mr. Spratt has purchased starting blocks, hurdles, cones, and an official measuring tape.On Wednesday, April 7, we will hold our "Try Day" track and field event using the new equipment.

This grant allows us to seize the opportunity to enrich our school sport program with a new and non-traditional activity such as track and field. A special thank you to Mr. Mike Spratt for making this possible!

Loonie Auction:
Last but not least, please remember to drop off your donations and ticket order form to Tracey by Monday, April 12.   Thank you!
