Screen-Free Week is not just great for kids, but it can help adults
de-stress and enjoy family time. According to a recent Gallup poll, between a quarter and a third of adults believe they spend too much time watching television (33 percent), using their cell phones (27 percent) or using the Internet (26 percent). Only 18 percent felt they used Facebook or email (13 percent) too much. However, these numbers are considerably higher for 18 to 29 year olds, i.e. young parents. By their own admission, these Millennials say they spend too much time on the Internet (59 percent), on their cell phones (58 percent) and with social media sites (48 percent). Could this admission portend a scaling back on the use of new technologies? Might a backlash against technology help recapture the free-range childhoods that Millennial parents never experienced? Maybe Screen-Free Week is a first step.

Screen-Free Week is almost here! Join EYI and CA Technologies by signing-up to take the pledge online at www.eyi.org/screenfree and be eligible to win great family prizes. Screen-Free Week is a fun way to "Celebrate the Magic of Being Unplugged." It's a time for children to play outside, read, daydream, create, explore and spend more time having fun with family and friends. And, Screen-Free Week isn't just about giving up screens for seven days; it's a time for adopting healthier lifestyle habits that will improve the well-being and quality of life for you and your family all year round.
We thank our partners and sponsors for supporting this year's campaign and pledging to be screen-free and planning fun activities at their places of business.

Pritchard Trust awards $150,000 to EYI
The Early Years Institute received a $150,000 grant from the William E. and Maude S. Pritchard Charitable Trust to further their work in the expansion of the Long Island Nature Collaborative for Kids (LINCK), an EYI project. This grant will allow EYI to plan and develop additional Nature Explore outdoor classrooms on Long Island and expand the LINCK Steering Committee and its programs. Through this expansion, EYI will be able to address the toll that sedentary, indoor lifestyles are taking on the development of children and focus on the health benefits gained from Nature Explore outdoor classrooms. |
