EYI announced yesterday at a conference for school administrators that Long Island is doing much better than we did two years ago in the provision of UPK. Long Island public schools have made significant strides in serving more students in UPK programs compared to our first report on the 2007-08 school year.
In 2009-10 Long Island districts offered UPK and 78 percent of eligible children were enrolled in the programs - up nearly 2,000 students to 8,455, according to the latest survey. Enrollment has been limited, our report shares, with more than 100 children turned away in at least five districts. -- Dana Friedman, president, The Early Years Institute |
