May 3-5, I attended the national Smart Start Conference in North Carolina with EYI staff, Helen Alessi and Trish Manzi. What a treasure trove of innovation and inspiration for early childhood community leaders! We learned a lot and shared our experiences with the Early Development Instrument, LINCK, and Screen-Free Week in three workshops. The highlight was hearing from former Governor Jim Hunt, the architect of Smart Start, and David Lawrence, former editor of Miami Herald and Florida's champion for children. Some gems: "These children aren't in need; we are in need of these children." "Families always put children first. Government needs to do the same." "Pay a little now or a lot later." -- Dana Friedman, Ed.D., President, The Early Years Institute |
