It's time to take stock of how much time we spend in front of TVs, computers and hand-held devices. Research shows that children truly suffer when they're exposed to too much screen time, so during "Screen-Free Week" we're encouraging families to balance their use of electronic entertainment with play and creative learning. After parents and caregivers take the pledge, they can use EYI's "Screen-Free Alternatives Guide," with free and discounted events and places to go April 18-24. We thank CA Technologies and the Fair Media Council for partnering with EYI locally as we join hundreds of organizations throughout the country in this effort. You may pledge online to qualify to win prizes, and make this experience last well beyond the week. -- Dana Friedman, Ed.D., President, The Early Years Institute

| Update: QUALITYstarsNY field test | |
The field test for QUALITYstarsNY has been completed and Long Island had the most programs participating (33). The study found that programs were generally positive about this new system, although they hoped to see some changes, e.g. new scoring on the standards to give more weight for learning environments and family engagement, and reduction of documents needed to substantiate points. There was some surprise as to the low number of providers who are familiar with the Environmental Rating Scale which accounts for 14 out of 100 points in New York State, and which all state quality ratings systems use.
