EYI is working with the Leadership Team in Westbury to review the data from the Early Development Instrument (EDI) that measures school readiness of children in Westbury in the middle of Kindergarten year. We have made presentations to community leaders, the Westbury School Board, pre-K and Kindergarten teachers and will speak to local political leaders in a few weeks. As we had hoped, the EDI data are powerful: they not only pinpoint skills that children may be lacking but also where those children live in the community. Now specific solutions can be targeted to particular neighborhoods, which we hope will attract more community residents to become involved. -- Dana Friedman, Ed.D., President, The Early Years Institute

| Join "Screen-Free Week" April 18-24 |
|
EYI will join the Campaign for a Commercial Free Childhood and hundreds of organizations, libraries, child care centers and pediatricians for "Screen-Free Week" to encourage families to reduce their use of electronic entertainment and explore other ways to learn and play. Parents can sign a screen-free pledge and then track their own progress. Merchants and community organizations are being invited to provide alternative activities for free or at discounted prices, and EYI will publish an on-line "Screen- Free Alternatives Guide" which will be a valuable reference for families the entire week. For more info on how your organization can participate in Screen-Free Week, click here and watch your email for additional details. |
