The Child Care Council of Nassau is offering the Out-of-School Time Quality Initiative -- an opportunity for school-age agencies to gain free training and technical assistance in implementing the New York State Afterschool Network's Quality Self-Assessment (QSA) Tool. Dan Duncan, a developer of the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) strategy which maps community assets by including organizational services and individual gifts, was our special guest at the EYI Advisory Committee meeting June 4th. EYI will use the ABCD strategy in our Early Development Instrument project in Westbury. |
| Say hi to Scarlett and Matilda Roach |
Our Madagascar hissing cockroaches have been named Scarlett (r.) and Matilda. First prize winner of our "Name Our Bugs" contest is Dylan Martinsen, 9, of Long Beach, who won family seal walks from CRESLI. Second prize, provided by the Vanderbilt Museum, goes to Walter Landis, a group home leader. EYI uses the large bugs to excite and overcome the fears of children, teachers and parents about interacting with nature. |

EYI welcomes Hofstra University junior Laura Finkelstein who has joined EYI's internship program for the summer, assisting in our marketing and communication efforts. A New Jersey native, Laura lives in Hempstead and is majoring in Mass Media Studies with a minor in Radio, Television and Film. |
