Friday Good News
Welcome back to another edition of BNE's Good News Weekly!
BNE & Erie County Use AmCham Event for Canadian Outreach

I had the privilege this week of joining with Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz in making a joint presentation before the Ontario Chapter of the American Chamber of Commerce in Canada.  The title of our joint presentation was "Western New York - The U.S. Gateway for Canadian Business", and it was very well received by our audience of approximately 65 Canadian companies and professional service providers.

The County Executive started the program by speaking about the improved business climate in our region, highlighting New York State's support of the WNY Regional Council's "Strategy for Prosperity" plan and Governor Cuomo's billion dollar commitment.  He cited examples of programs offered by the

Erie County Industrial Development Agency and emphasized his administration's desire to become stronger partners with Canadian companies seeking to expand into the U.S.

For BNE's portion of the program, I focused on the nuts and bolts of how to expand into the U.S. market.  My presentation covered practical considerations like site selection, immigration, financing, cross border issues and how the BNE could assist in all of these areas.  The County Executive and I both spoke to the many regional assets that make Buffalo Niagara a more compelling location for Canadian business expansion.

I would like to extend our thanks to Fraser Milner Casgrain and our colleagues at AmCham Canada for their sponsorship and support of this great event.

Global Gateway Series Makes Binational Connections

"Advanced Manufacturing - Binational Niagara's Sweet Spot" was the title of the second installment of the Global Gateway Export Financing Series that was held yesterday in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario.  The six-part series is designed to connect business owners and senior executives on both sides of the border with finance and capital professionals to help advance growth in key industry sectors within our binational Niagara region.

BNE's business development staff attended the event sponsored by the Binational Alliance, the Niagara Industrial Association and our investors and colleagues at the Erie County Industrial Development Agency.  A roundtable discussion included presentations by BNE investor Moog, Summer Street Capital Partners LLC and Girotti Machine from St. Catherines.  Over 40 advanced manufacturers and professional service providers benefitted from their participation in this valuable program.  Congratulations to Binational Alliance Executive Director Arlene White and all the sponsors on a very successful event.

Buffalo Niagara Ranks 20th in Attracting International Tourists

With the summer tourism season just around the corner, the timing couldn't have been better for this week's release of an annual survey by the U.S. Department of Commerce's Office of Travel and Tourism Industries that ranked Buffalo Niagara 20th among top U.S. destinations for international tourists.  According to the survey, our region attracted an estimated 335,000 overseas tourists, enabling us to make the list for the first time.

The top 20 ranking put Buffalo Niagara one spot behind Anaheim, CA, home to Disneyland.  Adding to the significance of the ranking is that the survey does not include visitors from Canada or Mexico.  Click here to check out the other high profile destinations that whose company we now share.  Congratulations to Visit Buffalo Niagara President & CEO Dottie Gallagher-Cohen and Niagara Tourism & Convention Corp. President & CEO John Percy for the role their organizations played in this great achievement.

Buffalo Niagara ::
Where Life Works

Tell Us How Buffalo Niagara Works for You

"Like too many Western New Yorkers, I moved out of the area after college in search of better opportunities. After 9 years in the Washington DC marketplace, I returned to Western New York. Being away allowed me the opportunity to appreciate all that this area has to offer. The combination of our beautiful seasons, cultural activities, sporting events, housing costs, recreational activities, education systems, result in a diverse area perfect for raising a family. However the unadvertised commodity is the people. The hardworking,
caring friends, neighbors and strangers that make up this area. From the October Storm, to the block parties and numerous ethnic festivals, this area comes together, like no other I have seen. Buffalo is a great place to live and a place I am proud to be from."
