| $35 million UB Grant Packs Economic Development Punch | |
Governor Andrew Cuomo came to town this week to officially sign the $35 million UB 2020 Challenge Grant that will kick-off the University at Buffalo's plan to relocate its School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences to the downtown Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus. The award is part of the broader NYSUNY 2020 program that was previously approved by the state after being championed by UB representatives, elected officials across western New York and many private sector business leaders in recent years.
The state grant is a part of the overall $375 million plan that will have a tremendous economic development impact on our region. Tangible signs of this impact will be the creation of more than 3,000 jobs - 1,600 temporary construction jobs and more than 2,000 faculty, staff and research jobs at UB. In addition to the jobs, this project will serve as a catalyst for additional development on the medical campus and lend towards the creation of new start-up companies. It will add to the attractiveness of the medical campus as a destination point and as a result be incorporated into our life sciences marketing and attraction efforts. Congratulations to the entire University at Buffalo community on this first step in ensuring that UB continues to evolve as a major driver of our region's economic growth.

| BNE Project Win Opens Doors in Lackawanna | |
The Lackawanna Halal Market, a 2009-2010 BNE project win, opened the doors of their new supermarket this week. Located at Ridge Road and Steelawanna Avenue, the 18,000 square foot store features a full line of produce, meats and poultry, seafood, baked goods and grocery items. In addition to the investment and job creation at the store, the new market fills a void in the City of Lackawanna where no other large or chain grocery store is located.
Much like Jews who observe kosher laws, Muslims eat only halal meats and poultry. The Jaarah family has owned and operated a halal market and slaughterhouse in New York City for the last 17 years. Based on the growing population of Muslims upstate, they chose to expand the family business to the Buffalo Niagara region. Click here to read more of their interesting story, and good luck and best wishes to the Jaarah's for many years of success.

Buffalo Niagara :: Where Life Works | | Tell Us How Buffalo Niagara Works for You | |
"Like too many Western New Yorkers, I moved out of the area after college in search of better opportunities. After 9 years in the Washington DC marketplace, I returned to Western New York. Being away allowed me the opportunity to appreciate all that this area has to offer. The combination of our beautiful seasons, cultural activities, sporting events, housing costs, recreational activities, education systems, result in a diverse area perfect for raising a family. However the unadvertised commodity is the people. The hardworking, caring friends, neighbors and strangers that make up this area. From the October Storm, to the block parties and numerous ethnic festivals, this area comes together, like no other I have seen. Buffalo is a great place to live and a place I am proud to be from."
