Welcome back to another edition of BNE's Good News Weekly! |
| Regional Council Finishes Community Plan | |
The last two weeks saw announcements of 20 separate initiatives that will vie for up to $40 million in economic development funding from the state of New York. The announcement of these recommended projects represents four months of tireless work by a very dedicated group of economic development professionals, community development organizations, higher education institutions and respected private sector business leaders.
WNY Council recommended projects were broken down into two categories. A dozen public-sector priority projects that would be supported by up to $25 million in direct state funding were announced last week. These projects represent critical opportunities to build upon the region's strengths and competitive advantages, and would immediately accelerate job creation and economic growth. The recommendations reflect a regional approach, as there are some projects with a regional impact, and at least one project in each county. Collectively, they would support direct creation/retention of more than 1,500 jobs with nearly $285 million in capital investment. Click here to see a list of the public sector projects.
Eight private-sector projects were announced this week that are being recommended for up to $15 million of support in the form of tax credits through the state's Excelsior program. These projects would create or retain more than 830 jobs and result in almost $100 million of investment across the region. The BNE has been working in various capacities with four of the private sector companies whose projects were recommended, and we look forward to being able to provide additional assistance as projects are hopefully funded and begin to move forward.
Congratulations and thank you to all the members of the WNY Council, the very dedicated members of the work groups and the companies and institutions who were recommended. Everyone who participated is to be commended for their contributions to a final product that can truly be represented as a total community effort. I am particularly proud of the efforts of our staff here at the BNE who contributed over 400 man hours to this effort, further strengthening our positive working relationship with our partners at Empire State Development Corporation.
