Happy belated Thanksgiving and welcome to your October issue of Access U.S. This month I feature New York's Small Business Development Center, Buffalo's strong economic growth and a prominent Buffalo law firm opening its doors in Canada.

Plus, BNE will be at CMTS on Monday & Tuesday, October 17-18 in downtown Toronto. If you would like to set up a one-on-one meeting either at the show or at your facility, please contact me today.

New York State Small Business Development Center

sbdc The New York State Small Business Development Center (SBDC) is the premier business assistance organization in the state. We provide expert management and technical assistance to start-up and existing businesses. Our Niagara office is located in Lockport and hosted by Niagara County Community College. It primarily serves Niagara, Erie, and Orleans counties but can help any small business owner located in the state.

Because of the funding we received from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), the State of New York, and our host campuses, we are able to provide our professional and confidential counseling at no charge to our clients.

Buffalo Niagara's Job Creation and Housing Market Outpaces the Nation

Buffalo Niagara's economy remains strong despite significant national and global headwinds. In fact, Buffalo Niagara continues to outpace the nation in several economic indicators. The region has experienced seventeen consecutive months of private sector job growth! Our economy, the nation's 54th largest at $45.1 billion, grew over 3.0% in 2010, outpacing the national metro average of 2.5%. Our region's unemployment rate, currently 7.25%, is dramatically lower than the national unemployment rate of 9.10% thanks to the robust job growth in the private sector.

Our housing market remains strong; median home prices have appreciated 15% since 2008. Nationally, home prices have fallen over 11% in the same time period. The local foreclosure rate of 0.3%, is well below the national average of 2.23%, and 88.1 percent of our population can afford the median home price in our region placing Buffalo Niagara in the top three on the home affordability index of comparable metros.

Canadian companies consider expansion into the US for many reasons including low interest rates, the soft US real estate market, a strong Canadian dollar and the proximity of the huge U.S. market.

Along the way, smart business leaders learn from their peers. Buffalo Niagara Enterprise, in collaboration with Buffalo Niagara Partnership and Phillips Lytle, invite you to Cross Border Connections, a unique panel discussion featuring Canadian business leaders that have successfully expanded into the U.S.
