September 2011
Access US
Welcome to your September edition of Access US! In this issue we highlight how Human Resources planning can help smooth your US expansion and a brand new BNE video.

BNE staff will be in Toronto attending the Canadian Manufacturing Technology Show (CMTS) on October 17-20. If you'd like to set up a one-on-one meeting during those dates, whether at the show or at your facility, please email me today.

HR Planning Simplifies Expansion to the U.S.

When considering an expansion to the U.S., companies often neglect to give the administration of Human Resources, Workers' Compensation, Employee Benefits and Payroll the attention it deserves because it is not seen as a profit centre within businesses. However, a well designed and implemented plan is critical to protect the bottom line since any mistakes, oversights or unfortunate circumstances in these four areas could negatively impact on profits due to law suits and other claims.

The key to achieving successful outcomes is a strategic, step-by-step plan that focuses on the major aspects of HR. Although there are many similarities between the U.S. and Canada with respect to HR matters, there are also a number of major differences.

A Million Reasons Last week, BNE  launched our "Million Reasons..." advertising campaign featuring the first of a two-part video series supported by grants from BNE investors National Grid and National Fuel Gas Company. The new video features BNE investors and other prominent community leaders who share a variety of the "million reasons" why a company would want to expand to the Buffalo Niagara region. Complimenting the videos, the campaign will be seen in the Buffalo Niagara International Airport and other select print outlets.

Canadian Automation Company Expands to Buffalo Niagara

JF Automation
JF Automation is an industrial automation company headquartered in Mississauga, Ontario. The company recently signed a contract with General Motors in Tonawanda, NY to perform retrofit work on General Motors' CNC Machines. For the company to fulfill their contract with General Motors, they required a location near the Tonawanda facility.

Since the company is new to the United States market place, understanding the differences between doing business in Canada and the U.S. and addressing cross-border needs were critical components of the project. BNE assisted the company in cross border due diligence by providing information on taxes, accounting, immigration, incorporation and banking in the United States. To address workforce recruitment and training concerns, BNE introduced the company to the Workforce Investment Board, the Department of Labor, staffing agency, and Erie Community College's CNC Precision Machining Program.
