A New Beginning
Jaime Aguirre, our Director of Business Development, had her first child early this month. At the Arts Council, this has been an exciting event especially when we were receiving hour by hour updates and we welcomed little Melina into the world. Yesterday, I finally had the opportunity to see Melina at our staff holiday party. As I gently rocked her back and forth, my mind was filled with thoughts and images of how much the world has changed in such a short time. I thought of my grandparents and all of the changes they have witnessed in their lifetimes from mimeograph machines to word processors, from radio to Twitter ("Yes, grandma, I'm pleased to know you follow me on Twitter"). I pondered all of the changes I've seen in my lifetime, the first moon landing, the internet, and mobile phones. As I held Melina, I thought of all the change that will fill her life. Change can seem scary, but it is one of the things we know will happen and can always count on. The real question is how we come to accept it and work with it. And in answering that question I find myself looking to Art. I know firsthand that experiences with Art and creating Art provide insight and adaptability that are fundamental to working with a world that is changing. Arts education is one of the ways we can prepare Melina for a world yet imagined. Art is a way for us to stay grounded and connected to our humanity and the Art we create today is how we will be remembered by generations to come.

Developing Multicultural Competency with Dr. Doris Carroll
|
|
The Arts Council of Metropolitan Kansas City and Dr. Doris Carroll, Associate Professor at Kansas State University, invite you to attend a series of three, four-hour, three and a half hour workshops for the purpose of increasing cultural competency for Kansas City area artists, leaders, and arts organizations' staff, board, volunteers and interns.
Last year over 40 individuals from the Kansas City community attended. Participants discussed issues of privilege, board and audience attendance, and identified strategies to strengthen neighborhood arts development. It is the Arts Council's goal through these workshops to encourage arts organizations to capitalize not only on their own cultural strengths as organizations but to embrace the cultural strengths of those around them as well. When organizations embrace diversity, they open their doors to more people and a broader audience.
Sign up today to attend one or all of our three Cultural Competency workshops offered this Winter & Spring of 2012. Space is limited on a first come, first serve basis.

Calling Arts Easy - the Mobile Arts Line
|
|
Kansas City Public Television (KCPT), in partnership with Stay In Touch Mobile, has created a local "Mobile Arts Line" that allows citizens & visitors to simply Dial #250 & Say KC ARTS, in order to reach arts & cultural organizations in the greater Kansas City area. Upon connecting, the systems asks the caller to simply say the name of the local organization they would like to reach, and the call is transferred to a main number for that group.
The benefit is that arts patrons do not have to know or look up phone numbers to the box office or information lines - hopefully resulting in more calls, more participation and more ticket sales!
The system works on any of the major wireless carriers (not on landline phones). This provides convenience when folks are out of home and away from phone books and personal computers.
This service is provided free of charge to users.

The Nutcracker is a holiday tradition that knows no age boundary. One of my favorite Kansas City traditions, The Nutcracker, reminds me of many a Christmas come and gone, spent with family and friends. You still have time to see it this season! While tickets are limited, this timeless classic can be seen at the new Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts through Saturday, 12/24. For more information, please visit www.kcballet.org.
Another timeless treasure that is near and dear to my heart is Rick Springfield. I am a fan. Okay, that is an understatement; I am a borderline Rick Springfield stalker. For the fourth year in a row, the Midland Theater brought back this incredible talent on December 13th. Once again, I was blown away with his high energy performance. He provides non-stop excitement while onstage. Speaking of the stage, the renovations the Midland Theater completed a few years ago gave us a gorgeous, quaint venue to enjoy many types of artists and entertainment. If you haven't been, I highly recommend you check it out. I am one of many who are hopeful the Midland continues to bring Rick back to rock Kansas City every year!
