Siam Real Estate Newsletter May 2010 Greetings! Bangkok situation: As I write this the worst of it for now is over, the RED’s have gone home, leaving the hardcore terrorists torching many key buildings in Bangkok, how this is allowed to happen is beyond most of us as it happened during the nightly curfew, where were the police and army? As a foreigner it is difficult to comprehend what has and is happening here and most importantly the reasons for the anarchy. After all Thailand is a democracy and what we have seen is anything but a democratic process. It is notable that the king has failed to intervene on this occasion which halted the last coup, maybe due to his continuing ill health. The government, give them their due tried peaceful means with the RED’s to end the siege and at one stage the Red leaders agreed to the governments compromise for new election dates then reneged on the decision and the rest is history. Thaksin ex.prime minister and fugitive has sponsored the RED’s protests and paid each and every protestor money to camp out in Bangkok fueling the fire of what has occurred. The conflict seems to be the poor, ignorant and uneducated versus the rich, educated elite, and Bangkok business. The RED’s stirred up by Thaksin’s Hench men with radical political agenda’s which have little to do with the demands of the poor or for the good of the country. History tells us that it is doubtful if there are new elections in November that it will solve the serious rift between the people of Thailand due to so many differing political agendas which also involves the army and the police who all want a piece of the political pie for selfish gain. Thailand has made a full economic recovery since the global recession unlike the UK and even with these terrible events will prosper in 2010. Outside of Bangkok, you would not know if living in Phuket, Pattaya, Hua Hin, Krabi, Koh Samui and other tourist locations that there was a problem if you did not follow the media (which now follows us). No previous serious situation such as the last coup have ever affected us from a security stand point or any repercussions other than tourist numbers reducing. The local Thais in tourist destinations have too much to lose and are very happy taking money off us expats and tourists! The reporting by most countries foreign offices saying Thailand is unsafe and not to travel here is totally wrong and misleading. ALL tourist locations such as Phuket are safe and well, thank you and the Thai smile is very much in evidence! We look forward to welcoming you here as the above is throwing up some great rental and new property deals. Here are some recent articles:
