Phuket property remains very resilient and has gone through many crisis over the last 6 years but still tourists come in large numbers and property prices remain stable. Buyers are returning since September and rentals are booming both holiday and long term and property sales are picking up. We have gone through SARS, Bird Flu, Financial restrictions, Coup, Tsunami, Thaksin, Bangkok airport closure, Political unrest, global economic crisis, H1N1 virus, what next!

We are all hoping that the Thai government will eventually get around to increasing property leases from 30 years to 90 years and allow foreigners to own at least one rai of land (1,600 m2). Also to increase condominium foreign freehold ownership from 49% to 100%. Rumours abound in Bangkok that one or more of these measures will happen in the not too distant future as it can only be good for Thailand’s economy. Presently Phuket contributes 15% to the nations GDP through tourism.

Our only serious gripe besides the above is the huge tax on wine and the bad driving!
