Justin Wadsworth-head shotTHE HOME STRETCH - BY: JUSTIN WADSWORTH

With the weather turning and the days growing shorter and shorter, the minds of cross county skiers and their coaches turn to the racing season soon upon us. For sure a huge amount of the training takes place from May to September, but it's October and November that will set the stage for the success of the athlete for the first part of the season, as well as their major goals for the season, be it World Championships, Tour de Ski or the National Championships. A VOYAGE INTO THE CANADIAN POINTS LIST (CPL)

The basis of the Canadian ranking system - What we call the "Canadian point system" and its extension, the Canadian Point List (CPL), are born out of the need for a consistent and reliable method of measuring performance in cross country skiing and for determining the relative performances of skiers of different ages and stages of development. Full article

Article complet
JUNIOR TRAINING - PERIODIZATION OF INTENSITY TRAINING

The following article will discuss what types of intensity juniors should be undertaking at specific times of the year. It will also look at energy systems and types of intensity training that should be avoided during the development process of junior athletes.

As a reminder, the Yearly Training Plan (YTP) is broken into various cycles of focus during the training year. In general, May through June or July is the General Preparation Phase, July or August through September is the Specific Preparation Phase, October into November is the Pre-Competitive Stage, with the Early Competition Phase taking place mid-November through to December. The Competitive Phase can also be termed the Peak Competitive Phase and it lasts January through to the end of March, with the Recovery Phase lasting the month of April. These phases vary based on the age of the athlete and level of development (see the September 2010 edition of Coach Connections for more details).

logo - FISFIS POINTS - BRIEF INTRO
FIS maintains a points ranking list that is used for seeding in FIS sanctioned races, defining minimum eligibility standards and ranking of athletes for Red Group status and national quotas. The basic objective of the FIS points list is the same as the Canada Points List (CPL); they both aim to rank different athletes over multiple races based on the relative finish times in each race. The specific methodology for calculating FIS and CPL are quite different. Many people have debated the validity and reliability of the different methodologies and we will not get into that discussion here.

A few of the key aspects of the FIS points system are listed in a separate article or for more information check the FIS website.

NOTE - from now on all skiers racing internationally (especially races in the USA) will require a FIS licence in order to score CPL points. CPL data is automatically added for all international FIS sanctioned races and only skiers with a valid FIS licence at the time of the race will be entered in the FIS points database. To register for a FIS licence follow the information posted on the CCC website (http://www.cccski.com/Events/License-Applications.aspx). Skiers must have a valid CCC licence prior to applying for a FIS licence.

'GEEK CORNER' - ONLINE COACHING SOFTWARE
With the recent explosion of online technology and services, coaches have many new options to explore when looking for ways to provide better and faster service to athletes. Many of these tools aid in communication and information sharing as well as some specific tools to assist with training plans and logs. One of the biggest players in the online world is Google and they have acquired some of the best technology and provide it free to the public (with ads of course) with services like YouTube, Docs, Calendar, Gmail, Picasa, etc. This certainly isn't an advertisement for Google or any other company, but it is useful to be aware of the different options available that might be able to streamline your work as a coach or club. We'll go over some of the useful features that might be relevant for a typical ski coach or club but this won't be a how-to guide on using those services.

Statoil - St Alberta campSTATOIL - BECKIE SCOTT - SKI FIT NORTH CAMP - ST. ALBERT, ALBERTA
Two-time Olympic medallist, Beckie Scott, launched the second year of the Ski Fit North Alberta program at a training camp in St. Albert on September 17-19. The event was held in cooperation with the St. Albert Nordic Ski Club and was designed to inspire Canadian youth to try cross country skiing and maximize their potential.

Scott brought inspirational messages to the area for the second year in conjunction with the Ski Fit North Alberta program. This program is a unique and proud partnership between Cross Country Canada (CCC), Cross Country Alberta (the provincial affiliate to the National body) and Statoil.

The Beckie Scott Youth Ambassador Program joined forces with Ski Fit North Alberta, and showcases Statoil's commitment to supporting CCC. This partnership is designed to ensure the success of Canadian cross-country skiers by focusing on supporting Cross Country Canada's junior and youth programs and reaching out to youth in remote areas.

Statoil's support of the next generation of athletes also includes supporting National Junior Team members and CCC's National Development Centres with enhanced coaching, training and competition opportunities.

"We are extremely proud to invest in the heroes of tomorrow and support the sport of cross country skiing in Canada," said Lars Christian Bacher, president of Statoil Canada. "It is our hope that this contribution will help build strong grassroots programs across Canada so that amateur athletes have the skills, coaching and competitive resources to realize their full potential."

TRAINING ATHLTES WITH A PHYSICAL DISABILITY

Recently Sport Canada has released a new supplementto Canadian Sport for Life that specifically addresses training athletes with a physical disability. The guide is a summary of current scientific research about training of athletes with disability. It is organized by major disability type and the LTAD stages of development.

HIGH PERFORMANCE SYSTEM COORDINATORS

What exactly is a HP System Coordinator and what role do we play in the CCC High Performance System? The answer can be both long and very short. The short answer is the HPSC's work with athletes, coaches, clubs, NDCs and divisions to support the delivery of athlete and coach development programs with the goal of increasing the quantity and quality of athletes at the L2C and T2C stages and that will eventually enter the T2W stage (NST program). How exactly that is achieved, is the long answer.

THUNDER BAY NDC - UPDATE

NDC Thunder Bay (formerly known as NTDC) has been hard at work training for the upcoming race season.  Under the tutelage of Head Coach Eric Bailey, now in his 7th year with NDC, the team is looking strong and fit with the beginning of racing on the not so distant horizon. Training camps at the Haig Glacier in Canmore, Alberta, as well as dry land training in Wisconsin and locally at Cloud Lake have occupied the majority of summer training initiatives and have been very successful methods of ensuring a successful start to the training year.  An early snow camp in Austria from September 20th-October 10th will cap off what has been a tremendous off-season preparation period.
