| From: FasterSkier.com | RACING SEASON UPDATES
With only 2 weekends of racing under the belts of Canadian skiers, we already have numerous excellent results to report. NST skiers have spread out to West Yellowstone, Finland and Sweden for World Cups, Super Tour and other FIS races. We are fortunate that the popularity of skiing in North America has resulted in a renewed focus on coverage in the online and print media. Within hours of the races you can check out CCC, SkiTrax, SkiFaster or FasterSkier for updates and interviews. Many of the skiers also have active Twitter accounts and post links and messages immediately after the races are finished.
So, keep up to date on the progress of the NST and all Canadian racers as they compete domestically and around the World this winter. With several wins in the first few weeks, this season promises to be an exciting year of racing for Canada!! |
CCC'S REVISED INTERNATIONAL POINTS BENCHMARKS
International Points Benchmarks (IPB's) are standards of performance per stage of development that, on average, indicate whether skiers are on pace or not to become successful senior athletes on the international racing scene. Therefore, different IPB's apply to specific stages of development (and related age groups), to gender and to event type (sprint or distance). Full article
Article complet |

TAPER AND PEAKING FOR JUNIOR ATHLETES
Taper and Peak are terms used to define the process of bringing an athlete to a "Planned Peak Performance".
Peaking can be defined as: the process of an athlete's adaptation to various types and methods of training to achieve superior athletic performance. Peaking is complex as it is the result of precise sequential training, and achieving ideal training states psychologically, skill related, tactically and physically. The athlete has reached their peak when a certain synergy is reached within the athlete's body and is linked to mental readiness. It can be explained as a special biological state characterized by perfect health, which includes an optimal physiological state which shows quick adaptation to training stimuli and a good recovery rate post training or competition. SIRC NEWSLETTER - COACHING
Leadership has been described as a process of social influence in which one person can get the support of another to accomplish a goal or task. In order to be a good leader and coach you must possess certain skills and knowledge to be able to guide your team in the best direction to reach your goals. Studies have shown that a person with a growth mindset would believe that leadership abilities can be learned and acquired through effort and experience. With this in mind, coaching education and leadership training programs should consider focusing on helping coaches and leaders develop a growth mindset about their leadership abilities. With everything in life one must practice the necessary skills to be the best and the same goes for coaching. National standards are set by the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC) and its partners are implementing new frameworks to help coaches reach for the stars as coaches help their players. The sport landscape is always changing; this is the same for the coaching world.

PARANORDIC (PN) CANADA POINTS LIST(CPL)
In an effort to provide the Para-Nordic community with a national ranking system just as for able body competitors, CCC will pilot a PN CPL point scoring system during the 2010-11 racing season.
For those familiar with the concept and principles supporting the CPL system, you will appreciate how challenging it is to come up with a reliable and representative Canadian athlete ranking system for PN skiers given the low number of PN participants and PN races compared with the able body world; for now anyway. That being said, with the momentum building lately around the integration of PN skiers at the 2011 Canada Winter Games, our recent successes at the PWG in Vancouver and a noticeable increase in divisions' engagement in PN development, what better time to initiate the process. NST/CNEPH PARK CITY ALTITUDE CAMP
The NST, CNEPH and a several development athletes travelled south to Park City, Utah for the annual 3-week altitude dryland camp in Sept/Oct. With the addition of Justin Wadsworth as the NST Head Coach, the team had first hand knowledge of the best locations for training and were able to sample the variety of roads and trails in the area. The camp was a mix of distance roller ski and running workouts at altitudes over 2500m, often approaching 3000m, and quality intensity sessions roller-skiing at lower altitude as well as the occasional strength workout and game of monopoly (iPhone or the NZ board game).
Conditions were excellent this year, with the first hint of summer for many of the Canmore based athletes. The athletes made it through the 3 weeks of intense training in great spirits with their sights set on the quickly approaching World Cup season. Many of the skiers returned to Canmore to 'fresh' snow on 'Frozen Thunder' for a few weeks before departing for Europe to begin the 2010-11 season.

ANOTHER ERA OF STRONG FEMALE PERFORMANCES IS SHAPING UP
By: Stephane Barrette
Yes, that's right. There is no misprint. The public's attention and media praises have been all about our men's team lately, which is quite understandable given their constant progress over the past 2-3 years, culminating with stellar results at the Vancouver Olympic Games and at U23 championships. I don't know about you but although I was as ecstatic as anybody else with our men's team results, I was simply stunned that the modest results from our women's team were basically not discussed or cared about in the media during and after the Games and even in conversations between cross country ski aficionados. It is as if we collectively felt that because our men did so well that we didn't really have to care about how our women had performed. It almost made one wonder whether we had a women's team at all at the Games. Would it be that we have just grown accustomed to be satisfied with celebrating only one gender's successes at a time? I guess that would be understandable if these fatalistic trends and cycles lasted over several quadrennials but does anybody remember that it was only 4 years ago that we had 3 women medaling with Beckie and Sara earning silver in the team sprint and Chandra earning the Olympic champion title in the sprint? Does anybody remember how our men's team was performing at the same time? Only George (Grey) cracked the top 30 once throughout the Games, finishing 25th in the pursuit. I guess that's part of the reason why we were all so impressed with our men's results this time around but was it any reason to not be even a little interested in our women's results?
