LEARNING STYLES AND THEIR APPLICATION TO TEACHING SKIING
By: Lisa Patterson, HPSC-East

It is believed that we all learn in different ways.  Think back to when you were in school, learned a new hobby, or sat in on a weekend conference.  How did you learn the key concepts or intricacies of a new skill?

Dr. Howard Gardner, professor of education at Harvard University, developed the "Theory of Multiple Intelligences" in 1983.  His belief is that humans have eight different types of intelligence, and therefore eight different pathways in which we learn.  These intelligences are:

· Verbal/Linguistic (word smart)
· Logical/Mathematical (number/reasoning smart)
· Visual/Spatial (picture smart)
· Body/ Kinesthetic (body smart)
· Musical/Rhythmic (music smart)
· Interpersonal (people smart)
· Intrapersonal (self smart)
· Naturalist (nature smart)

SKIING SPEEDS AS DEVELOPMENTAL BENCHMARKS
By: Stephane Barrette, Assistant HPD

It is well accepted that skiing speeds (or race times for given distances) are not reliable to compare a skier's performance from one race to another because of all the conditions and circumstances that can affect how fast athletes can complete a certain distance. But does this mean we should disregard skiing speed altogether as a useful performance and developmental benchmark?

There are a few considerations that can be appreciated to answer that question. For one, skiing speeds may not be relevant to express performance at specific events but they necessarily become more relevant and reliable as averages; over a season for example. Whether that is useful or not will be explored in this article. For two, even if skiing speeds are not reliable enough to measure performance in single events, nobody can escape the harsh reality that a skier needs to be capable of at least reaching those speeds over shorter distances in order to be competitive internationally eventually on all distances. Full article

PARANORDIC (PN) CANADA POINTS LIST(CPL)

A mid-season points list has been posted on the website. As this is still a pilot project results will be updated as they are accumlated and in some cases retroactively once skiers have had a chance to compete against other ranked skiers.

ParaNordic classifications have also recently been posted to the website for the information of racers and coaches.
