Canadian Men's Team, 4th Best in the World!
After every World Cup race, FIS calculate the standings for the Nations Cup, based on the number of World Cup points (top 30 skiers) that each skier collects for their country.
In the past Canada hasn't been much of a factor in the overall standings, particularly because of the challenges associated with travelling from Canada to all of the races, and also because of a lack of program depth.
In the last few seasons the team performances have picked up and the National Ski Team program have started to use Nation's cup standings as one of the benchmarks to evaluate team performance. For this year the team goal was to finish 11th, with a long term goal from the strategic plan, to be ranked among the top 6 nations in the world by 2018.

Thank You to Lazer Graphics
Cross Country Canada would like to congratulate long-time supporters John and Mary Carolyn Hart on their recent retirement after the successful sale of their Peterborough-based print and design business Lazer Graphics to The Vincent Press.
A sponsor of Cross Country Canada since 2002, Lazer Graphics was founded in Peterborough by John and Mary Carolyn in 1989. The company printed products such as flyers, pamphlets and brochures and also developed marketing campaigns, trade-show displays and branding materials. It was known for supporting both its local community and the Canadian cross-country ski community by providing complimentary or discounted print and design services for numerous projects and initiatives, including Cross Country Canada's long running and immensely successful Project Podium Calendar fundraising campaign. Mary Carolyn Hart, known as MC, won Businesswoman of the Year through the Greater Peterborough Chamber of Commerce in 2010. In addition to sponsoring CCC, the couple has been involved in many community programs, including the Peterborough YMCA and Festival of Trees.
Best of luck to John and MC in their retirement and our most sincere thanks for their tremendous support over the past 10 years. |

McCreary Ski & Outdoor Club, MB - Introduction to Community Coaching Credit: Pam Little
McCreary Ski & Outdoor Club held a successful Introduction to Community Coaching course in March. Thanks to Cross Country Association of Manitoba for sending Rob Kirchmann out to the country from Winnipeg to facilitate the course for our club. Six club members plus a skier from the Neepawa completed the ICC course. We had an action packed day at our local ski area at the McCreary Golf & Country Club. The best part was a fun practical session where local families volunteered to be our students. Thanks to an Investors Group Community Coaching Conference Grant our club was able to provide this important course. We are now prepared to start a Bunnyrabbit & Jackrabbit program for our communities.

Did You Know.....
- If Devon Kershaw is to maintain second spot on the Overall World Cup standings it would be the most successful finish by a Canadian male cross-country skier. Beckie Scott is the only other Canadian athlete to finish in the top-three in the overall standings. The two-time Olympic medallist finished second overall in 2006.
- Only seven Canadian cross-country ski athletes have reached the podium more than once in one season: Pierre Harvey, Beckie Scott, Sara Renner, Chandra Crawford, Devon Kershaw; Alex Harvey; Lenny Valjas
- Devon Kershaw became the fourth Canadian athlete to win two gold World Cup gold medals in one season. Others to accomplish the feat include: Pierre Harvey (1988); Beckie Scott (2006); and Chandra Crawford (2008).
- Topping the charts at 6'6", Len Valjas is also on the podium as one of the tallest athletes on the World Cup
- Canada had eight athletes contribute to our overall World Cup point total (four male and four females) marking one of the most successful team efforts in the history of the program.

Quotes of the Month
"Devon Kershaw has gone further than any cross-country skier from this country has ever gone before. He's put in more miles, spent more time on the road and had more success than anyone might have imagined. He has made a huge impression in arguably the deepest and most hotly contested of the winter sports - a sport that has been dominated by eastern Europeans and Scandinavians in the past; a pursuit that has, for the most part, eluded North American men until Kershaw came along. He alone has been on the podium four times, had two wins and finished an inspiring fourth overall in the gruelling nine-stage Tour de Ski through Germany and Italy. He's a Canadian Nordic knight constantly searching for new territory to conquer."
....Scott Russell, CBC Sports
"We knew Len was capable of these performances. He trains alongside Devon <Kershaw> and Alex <Harvey> every day so we know his speed is there. Len is a very smart skier and knows where to make his move which is huge in sprint racing. It is amazing for sure to do this now, especially on courses in Scandinavia. It is pretty incredible."
...Justin Wadsworth, head coach, Canadian Cross-Country Ski Team |
