2011 Start - One for the History Books

Canada's National Ski Team will head into the holiday break celebrating the best start in the history of the program.
Athletes from Canada's NST (able-bodied) and PNST (para) World Cup teams, have taken their turns leading the Canucks on the nordic highways en route to the podium during the early going of the 2011-12 campaign. Four of Canada's Para-Nordic racked combined to win five medals. Mark Arendz, of Springton, P.E.I., has led the way with completing a set of World Cup medals in the first three IPC Biathlon World Cup races. Brian McKeever teamed up with Erik Carleton to win silver at the season-opener of the IPC cross-country skiing World Cup while Colette Bourgonje grabbed the bronze.
Canada's World Cup athletes have circled the podium like hungry sharks with seven different athletes playing a part in the team's nine top-10 results. For the first time in the history of the program, all six athletes qualified for the sprint races, with three finishing in the top-10.
Depth is key to any podium attack, and I believe it is only a matter of time until you break through when you are podium contenders on a regular basis," said Tom Holland, high-performance director, Cross Country Canada. " These athletes the most talented all-around group of cross-country skiers at all levels the country has ever produced, creating a competitive culture of excellence on our National Ski Team that has athletes feeding off each other' success."
Alex Harvey, Devon Kershaw, Lenny Valjas, and Chandra Crawford have all posted top-five finishes in individual events, while Ivan Babikov had a seventh-place result already this year. Lenny Valjas and Drew Goldsack aslo finished fifth in the team sprint in Germany. |

Labrador City Training Camp Credit: Lisa Patterson
In my role as Eastern High Performance Coordinator with CCC, I had the privilege of returning to Labrador City to work with the Newfoundland & Labrador Ski Team once again. This was my third year in a row and I enjoyed my work with the team just as much as previous trips. The team is guided by new coach, Andrew Casey, a former NDC Thunder Bay ski team member. Andrew is originally from Corner Brook on the west coast of the island but is currently finishing up school at Memorial University in St. John's. Andrew's enthusiasm for the sport is infectious and will undoubtedly have a positive effect in building a strong team leading up to the Haywood Ski Nationals scheduled for Corner Brook in 2014. |
Quote of the Month
