Alex Harvey Bolts into Fifth Spot in Cross-Country Skiing World Cup Opener
Canada's Alex Harvey couldn't have asked for a better start to the season, surprising even himself with a fifth-place finish at the World Cup opener in Sjusjoen, Norway on Saturday. The 23-year-old Harvey, of St-Ferrol-les-Neiges, Que., narrowly missed the podium with a time of 33:21.5 after fighting his way around the 3.75-kilometre loop, which features a nice balance of, speed and technical corners, in the men's 15-kilometre individual start skate-ski race. "I'm super happy with today and even a little surprised. A 15-kilometre individual start is a black horse for me," said the emerging rock star on the top international circuit. "I really had a goal of getting into the top-10 today, but my skis were awesome so I'm very happy." Harvey and his World Cup mates concentrated their off-season training on building strength for the longer skate-ski races this winter.

Grant for NCCP L2T and T2T Workshops
Recently Cross Country Canada (CCC) established a grant for National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) Learn to Train (L2T) and Train to Train (T2T) workshops held during the 2011/12 season.
The objective of this grant is to improve the standard of coaching within the CCC sport system by supporting divisions in the delivery of these critical steps in coach education programming (Competition-Introduction context). Eligible expenses include Learning Facilitator honorarium and/or associated travel expenses.
In addition to potentially allowing divisions to offer more workshops, CCC is also making sure that participants will benefit directly from this funding opportunity by capping the registration fees of funded workshops to 100$ per participant.
Make sure to check if your division will offer more L2T and T2T workshops in response to this funding opportunity!

Para-Nordic Profile: Margarita Gorbounova, ON
Margarita Gorbounova is an experienced Para-Nordic athlete with vision impairment who lives and trains in Ottawa, Ontario. Margarita raced at the 2010 Vancouver Paralympics and wants to be one of the Canadian Para-Nordic team members at the 2014 Sochi Paralympics. To accomplish this she is looking for one or more guide skiers (i.e.: training/racing partners). She would like to train with this/these person(s) 2-3 times a week on rollerskis and later on snow and then go on to race with them this winter. A guide skier should be at least 10-15% faster than the racer they guide and ideally, should also have racing experience. Visually impaired Para-Nordic athletes and their guides compete as a team in ski races but do not have to be the same gender. The races listed below are in Margarita's plans for this season and funding support to assist with expenses is typically available to a dedicated ski guide:
- IPC World Cup races in the USA: Jan. 24 to Feb. 5, 2012,
- Ontario Cup races
- Ontario ParaSport Games in Huntsville, ON: Feb. 24-26, 2012
- National Championships: March 17-24, 2012
If interested, please contact Margarita at [email protected]

Club profile: A Canmore Nordic Ski Club Case Study Credit: Roy Strum
Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) Plan is a document created in 2004 that provides direction to coaches, parents, sport organizations about optimal athlete development priorities for all ages of people. Cross-country skiing has been a model sport in the implementation of the LTAD priorities for coaching and athlete development. LTAD literature recognizes that the Train to Train (TT) age group (11-14 in girls; 12-15 in boys) is a period of growth development that includes large individual variance in the start, rate, and tapering of physical growth characteristics including muscular, skeletal, and hormonal growth. It is quite common in cross-country ski competitions for this age group to have boys who are 150-160cm in height competing in the same age category s boys who are 170-180cm in height.

Quote of the Month
"It was an okay start, but I was looking for a little more today. I started sixth last, and that many guys racing around the same 2.5 kilometre loop for 15 kilometres beats it down pretty good, and some of the hills were quite icy. It was good to have this race to test your body and dial in your technique before the World Cup."
