DOUBLE POLING FOR DISTANCE EVENTS
By: Lisa Patterson & Stephane Barrette
The following article will cover some basics of double pole technique focusing more on the technique required for distance events. Sprint double pole technique relies on the same principles, but incorporates a power element that will be mentioned but won't be the focus of the article.
Each point in the article makes reference to a video collage posted on Youtube at the CCCSKIEAST site entitled, "Double Pole -Good Examples_NDC" and can be found at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hs79OMKTSyM
Please keep in mind that the athletes in this video are still working on their technique and are not perfect, but they are good examples from which a club coach can work from.
Within the article I will make reference to 4 key technique areas: 1. Balance & Stability 2. Body Position & Direction of Power 3. Weight Transfer/Shift 4. Timing

NCCP COURSE FUNDING OPPORTUNITY
Recently Cross Country Canada (CCC) established a grant for National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) Learn to Train (L2T) and Train to Train (T2T) workshops held during the 2011/12 season. The objective of this grant is to improve the standard of coaching within the CCC sport system by supporting divisions in the delivery of these critical steps in coach education programming (Competition-Introduction context). Eligible expenses include Learning Facilitator honorarium and/or associated travel expenses. In addition to potentially allowing divisions to offer more workshops, CCC is also making sure that participants will benefit directly from this funding opportunity by capping the registration fees of funded workshops to 100$ per participant. Make sure to check if your division will offer more L2T and T2T workshops in response to this funding opportunity!

GOAL SETTING FOR JUNIOR SKIERS
Article Summary: This article by Pete Phillips of Burke Mountain Academy outlines some guidelines and principles of goal setting for Junior Athletes. The article bases itself on the philosophy that we are preparing athletes for the "Long Term" rather than immediate success. Phillips breaks goals down into three categories of: Results goals - immediate success type goals, Performance Goals - technique or tactics type performance, and Process Goals - day to day training to overcome a weakness. The author suggests having the athlete complete an analysis exercise called "XC Demand and Capacity Analysis" which helps to assess the level of an athlete's development in specific areas of which the sport demands.

SPRINT TECHNIQUE AND TACTICS DRILLS
A sprint tactics session was held at the Southern Ontario Camp this summer. The session was lead by Canadian National Ski Team's Len Valjas - one of Canada's most up and coming sprinter on the International scene, and Thunder Bay Training Centre's Harry Seaton - regular top 6 qualifier in National events.
This video link provides you with some ideas on drills you can incorporate into your club training sessions. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xz3qVt2_2vA

SKATE TECHNIQUE
Referring back to our last Coach Connection Newsletter, you may recall the article on skate technique which encouraged the athlete to feel more weight on the ball of their foot during the kick phase. This Fasterskier article from Nov 2010 interviews Charlotte Kalla on improving her skate technique in terms of balance, stride and power, and credits an increase in ankle flex and more weight on the front of her foot for her improvement. It must have worked as it's hard to argue with the 2010-10km skate Olympic Gold Medallist! Read on... http://fasterskier.com/2010/11/the-secret-to-kalla%e2%80%99s-new-power/

"Leaders are made, they are not born. They are made by hard effort, which is the price which all of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile. " Vince Lombardi
What does it take to be a leader in sport? Hard work and dedication or natural ability or perhaps a bit of both. There is research for both arguments. Whether you are an athlete, coach, administrator or student you have the potential to be a great leader. Leadership can be seen as a mindset and where you are in your life or career is irrelevant.
