Cross Country Canada Thanks Maureen Kershaw and Jean Bristow for Long-Standing Service as Committee Chairs
Credit: Davin MacIntosh
Cross Country Canada's Board of Directors, staff, athletes and volunteers all thank Maureen Kershaw and Jean Bristow for their contribution and commitment to growing the sport of cross-country skiing across Canada.
Both Maureen and Jean have officially stepped down from serving as committee chairs and members of the CCC Management Committee following the organization's 2011 Annual General Meeting in Quebec, June 11-13.
Maureen, who has chaired the Women on Skis Committee for over 10 years, has played a critical role in growing and shaping programs and policies that have helped CCC to ensure equality of opportunity for girls and women as participants, competitors, coaches, officials and leaders in cross-country skiing.
Jean, who has been a volunteer for Nordic clubs and programs for more than two decades, contributed five years of service as Chair of the Clubs and Membership Committee, helping CCC to foster membership growth and club development.
Maureen and Jean's knowledge, passion and commitment to the organization will be very difficult to replace. Over then next while, CCC will work to refine the terms of reference for these committees and seek new chairs to carry out similar initiatives.
CCC thanks Maureen and Jean for their service. We are certain to see them at Cross Country Canada's events in the future. |

Cross Country Canada's Business Plan 2011/12 Now Available Online!
Much was accomplished in 2010/11 as CCC progressed significantly toward mid-term objectives set out in our Strategic Plan "It's Our Time". Progress over the past year was attributable to hard work and to improved organization and management. Small organizational changes and improved support for management, staff and volunteers resulted in improved alignment and efficiency, which led to accelerated achievement and growth.
The focus of operations in 2011/12 will be to manage growth to ensure that we are maximizing our potential while ensuring that commitments are sustainable. This will be achieved by carefully increasing capacity where needed and providing additional support to the many people who dedicate time and energy to helping CCC achieve its goals.

Para-Nordic: A Dream Come True
My name is Jeanie Rochon from Chelmsford, Ontario. I am 16 years old and I have Spina Bifida which prevents me from walking. Three years ago I took up Para-Nordic skiing and just fell in love with the sport. At the time I applied for a dream wish through the Sunshine Foundation. My dream was to meet the cast of the High School Musical but that did not work out. I felt a bit upset that my dream did not come true, but I did not give up. I decided to try a second time for meeting the Jonas Brothers but sadly this dream was also turned down. I kept my head held high and tried a third time. This time I knew exactly what I wanted, it was my own sit ski. My reason for asking for a sit ski was because it was an essential piece of equipment for my favourite sport and it was useful for my skiing career.

Cross Country Canada Names Haywood Securities Sponsor of the Year Credit: Wanda Bogdane
Haywood Securities Inc. has been a sponsor of CCC's since 2002 and has made ongoing monumental contributions to the sport of cross country skiing ever since. This year, they went above and beyond, however.
Not only has Haywood provided financial contributions to CCC to ensure that the ski teams and national competition series have long-term stability, but they even fly abroad to cheer on the teams in-person when it matters most (like in Oslo, Norway when Kershaw and Harvey won the sport's first World Championships Gold!). Warm congratulations to all at Haywood and a heartfelt thanks for all that you do for the sport and the organization! |
Frozen Thunder - Coach Alert!
Though most training schedules have been set in motion across various levels of the sport, here's a heads up for future planning that Canmore Nordic Centre Provincial Park (CNCPP) is aiming to have Frozen Thunder kick off again mid-October. The exact date will be confirmed closer to the time, but the general time frame of mid-month can be counted on for planning purposes.
With an interest in raising the bar again, CNCPP will aim to build a trail three km long this year to help foster fantastic early training for athletes across the country to use.
Stay tuned for more updates, or go to: http://www.tpr.alberta.ca/parks/kananaskis/parks_canmore.asp |

Junior Athlete Profile: Andy Shields, ON
You are from Waterloo, Ont., where do you attribute your early success from? I attribute almost all of my early success to my family. My parents let me do all kinds of sports as a little kid and gave me lots of freedom to do what I wanted with sport.
How did you get started in cross-country skiing? I can't remember my first time skiing. I was so young at the time - my parents must have taken me out skiing for the first time when I was 2 years old. What I do remember is my dad asking me if I wanted to join the local ski club (WRNSC) when I was about 5 years old. I was probably doing something really important with toy cars at the time so I quickly said "Yeah, sure." just to get rid of him. It turns out that was the best decision of my life, because after my first day of bunny rabbits I was hooked on skiing.
When not training/competing I am likely? When am I not training or competing? 24 hour athlete right here...
When finished with my cross-country skiing career, I want to? I just don't plan on ever ending my skiing career.
Career ambitions outside of cross-country skiing? Before I joined NDC Thunder Bay, I was dead set on being a chef after my skiing career. But after being completely immersed in the lifestyle of a training center athlete for a year, I'm beginning to think I've become irreversibly addicted to being around skiing. Now, I'm thinking of being a wax tech or something, or maybe a farmer as a compromise for the chef thing.
Favourite Vacation Spot? Livigno, Italy: Great food and good skiing, bases covered.
Favourite Book? Clockwork by Philip Pullman
Favourite Movie? Requiem for a Dream: It's got a good moral: The dope life isn't dope.
Favourite Olympic/Paralympic Moment? Usaine Bolt breaking three world records in Beijing.
Before a race, I will listen to what song? U Don't Know from Jay-Z's The Blueprint 2
My Olympic hero is? Petra Majdic in Whister. I'm sort of a quarter Slovenian myself so I hope I have a smidgin of her Slovenian toughness too.
