Para-Nordic National Ski Team caps off season with best ever Results Credit: Mike Edwards and Nadia Smith
The Para-Nordic National Ski Team (PNST) began the post 2010 Paralympic season with a bang earning 9 medals on the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) World Cup circuit. The team then capped off its successful season by winning a best ever 7 medals (5-gold and 2-silver) at the IPC World Championships (WCh) in Khanty-Mansiysk Russia, April 2-10 and claiming third overall in the WCh medal standings.
Brian Mckeever continued his winning ways, this time with new guide Erik Carleton, as he won 3 gold medals in the cross-country events and 1 silver medal in Biathlon at the WCh. The team's two sit skiers, Colette Bourgonje and Chris Klebl made history by winning double gold in the 'Cross-Country Long' event and Chris rounded out the team's medal count with a silver in the cross-country sprint. Jody Barber and Mark Arendz also performed well just missing the podium with a couple of hard fought 4th places finishes each adding to the team's strong showing at these WCh.
The team is on a well deserved break but will get back to a full training schedule soon. Team members are all looking forward to a successful 2011-2012 season.

Year Long Para-Nordic Journey Credit: Dave Benson

In March 2010, Manitoba became aware of the power of Paralympics through the inspiring performances of our visually impaired, sit-ski and standing para-athletes as they took on the world. The timing was ripe as Sport Manitoba was in the final year of preparing its Cross Country Ski team for Canada Winter Games 2011 in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
For the first time, Cross Country skiing was to be an integrated competition, with each province allocated three Para-Nordic athletes at the games. Through the summer of 2010 a search was on for coaches and athletes interested in this exciting opportunity. We had heard from Jeff Whiting that there were interested athletes and that gave us a place to start. Mary Montgomery had been involved in the local ski community in grass roots coaching and as an Occupational Therapist she had contacts with people who were interested in pursuing sport programs as part of a rehabilitation process. Mary passed along her coaching responsibilities for The Games to Megan Carter (Mary was preparing to bring a brand new cross country skier into the world during The Games)

Royal Canadian Pacific Dinner Train Fundraiser 2011
When it comes to luxury rail tours, Royal Canadian Pacific offers the finest experience in the world. When it comes to sport, Cross Country Canada (CCC) is the epitome of excellence and teamwork. As an extension of their long-term support, CP generously provided CCC with the opportunity for a select number of ticket purchasers to board the Royal Canadian Pacific for a night they will forever remember. The response to the event has been unbelievable and the limited number of tickets sold out so quickly, that we had to create a waiting list.
On May 5th 2011, Fred Green (President and CEO of Canadian Pacific) and wife Karen, CCC executives, and members of this year's history-making National Cross Country Ski Team will be the proud hosts of an unforgettable evening of celebration and pride for one of Canada's most unstoppable sports. Aboard the train guests will travel from Calgary through the spectacular Rocky Mountains to beautiful Banff. En route, team members will share the stories firsthand about this year's landmark results and what is ahead for the sport of cross country skiing.
A warm thank you to Canadian Pacific and the volunteer outreach committee for their commitment and effort to make this event happen. |

Track Attack Program: Skill Development Camps
A skill development camp is an integral part of a progressive club athlete development system. Camps can help children learn ski related technical skills, teamwork, self reliance and good eating habits. They can facilitate the recruitment of new participants, motivate, promote friendships, influence lifestyle choices and provide a positive introduction to activities that encourage physical fitness.
CCC's Skill Development Camps are part of CCC's Track Attack Program, and target children in the Learning to Train (L2T) stage of development. Refer to Target # 8 and Target #15 of the Attack Log for an outline of the camp program's objectives. CCC will provide free cross-country ski T-shirts to all participants in camps that meet the program criteria and are thereby eligible for this support.

Club Profile: McCreary Ski & Outdoor Club Credit: Pam Little
McCreary Ski & Outdoor Club is a new cross country ski club located at the base of the gorgeous Riding Mountain National Park (RMNP). We are trying to introduce skiing into an area once known as the ski capital of Manitoba. McCreary Golf and Country Club donates the use of their beautiful clubhouse and grounds for our home made track setter to groom about 3 kilometres of trail. To encourage skiing we offer free ski equipment and lessons every Sunday. CCSAM has come out to train community coaches. Through various grant programs we purchased ski equipment. Everyone is welcome at our Moonlight ski nights each month from December to March. We supply the hot punch while everyone brings a sharable snack for après ski. We are especially proud of a successful ski program that was introduced to the McCreary Grade 7 & 8 class this winter. Five sessions of XC basics culminated with a ski on the Oak Ridge trail in RMNP. We hope to continue our progress introducing XC skiing to our friends, relatives and visitors. |
