"This is the new National Ski Team. We have great team of coaches. Our wax techs are amazing giving us fast skis. We have great therapists and new sports psychologists. We have made a lot of changes for the better and I feel like I'm getting back to my normal self more all the time."

When not cross-country skiing I like to... mostly I can be found playing Xbox with my teammates or killing time catching up on TV shows I haven't seen.

My favourite Christmas gift as a child was... hard to remember a specific present, going to have to go with my remote control boat. Didn't go very fast, but lots of fun was had in my pool.

My favourite Olympic/Paralympic moment is... Devon Kershaw's finish in the 50km race at the 2010 Olympics

My favourite vacation spot and why.... canoe trips with my family were the best vacations I can remember. Most notable being a weeklong trip down the Spanish River in Northern Ontario. Favourite because I enjoy getting away from civilization occasionally and spending some quality time with my family.

My favourite place to cross-country ski and why.... Silverstar/Sovereign lakes. I think it's my favourite because it was the first trip I made out west and the location is just so amazing.

Dear Cross Connections Subscriber,

The holidays are just around the corner and we are sure it has been a busy month already for everyone.  Winter is in full swing with World Cups, NorAms, Provinical Cup and many people enjoying the recreational trails in their province.
We would like to extend a very happy holiday to everyone from all the staff at Cross Country Canada.  May your holiday season be filled with family, friends, fun and lots of skiing.

The Haywood NorAms December 17-19 in Rossland, BC were a solidStefan Kuhn Rossland set of races. Since 2007 the integration of the Teck Sprint Series into these races has provided developing athletes the grounds to grow and test their skills against a diverse athlete pool, resulting in great learnings as future Canadian ski guns.

But what was noticeable beyond the great racing for the athletes was that Rossland is a Teck town. Teck has sponsored Cross Country Canada and the Teck Sprint Series since 2007 and is also a local supporter of Blackjack, Rossland's local ski club. The connection between the community, the sport and the company was genuine, though not blatant.

One couldn't help but notice Teck's presence through the event spectators and on the town's streets that are thick with mining heritage. It made complete sense that Teck supports one of the NorAms' most technical races in a region authentically integrated with their operations.

CCC is proud of the great successes from these recent NorAms and would like to extend a warm thank you to Teck for their help in making the 2010-11 races an enormous success for our local and national race scene.

Teck is a diversified resource company committed to responsible mining and mineral development with major business units focused on copper, metallurigcal coal, zinc and energy. They have been a major sponsor of Cross Country Canada for nearly four years.

Female Talent Squad Update

Kikkan Randall with Camp participants S. Ontario
After four training camps throughout the summer and fall of the 2010-2011 season, the Female Talent Squad (FTS) program is coming to a close. Seventy nine percent of the named FTS athletes participated in one of the following training camps:
  • Ontario Camp - August
  • BC Camp - August
  • Quebec Camp - Oct
  • Alberta Sprint Camp - Nov

A mentorship program between FTS athletes and older more experienced high level or recently retired athletes is on-going.  This will continue formally for the rest of the 2010-2011 season and may continue informally between the athlete and mentor at their choosing.

The program will undergo a review in the next few weeks and we will be looking to make the program even more successful.  CCC has been undergoing talks to partner with "Fast and Female".  This will undoubtedly benefit from the knowledge and expertise of the "Fast and Female" programming.  Signs of the partnership may take effect as soon as March.  During the Nationals, we are looking to provide a "Meet and Greet" session between this year's FTS athletes and mentors, and potential 2011-2012 athletes.  Stay tuned as notices of events & selection criteria will be posted on the CCC website during the competitive season this winter.

Club Profile: Golden Nordic Ski Club, BC

Golden Ski Lodge

The Golden Nordic Ski Club Day Lodge project is well underway. The three-story lodge-which is constructed of over 300 square logs of beetle killed pine and heated with a geothermal system - is part of an $850,000 project that includes new trails, stadium, services, a new road and parking area.

"It's been an incredibly busy year for the Nordic Club," said club President Jeff Dolinsky. "But we've been lucky to have so many partnerships to help us out."

The club has received significant contributions from Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, Western Economic Development, the CRSD Economic Opportunity Fund, the Columbia Basin Trust and the Southern Interior Development Initiative Trust.

The club is looking for your help to raise the last bit of money needed to complete the project. The "Adopt a Log" campaign asks locals to donate $50 to the day lodge project, which in turn puts their name on a log in the lodge.

"The day lodge will provide a focal point for local and visiting skiers for events, courses and social activities and will be a significant attraction to complement the world class trails we have to offer. It's been a huge amount of work, but it's going to be very good for the club and for our community", Dolinsky added.

The Golden Nordic Ski Club offers 30+ kilometres of groomed skate and classic skiing. With an ever growing membership and commitment to expanded youth programming and event hosting the club hopes to create a real Nordic community in Golden. The full trail system is now open for the season with excellent snow coverage throughout.

For more information on the venue or to donate to the Adopt a Log program please visit the Golden Nordic Ski Club website at www.goldennordicclub.ca

Club Volunteer of the Month: Victor Chappeliaz, MB

credit: Audrey Comte

Victor Chappeliaz Voli of the monthVictor Chappellaz has been a familiar face at Birch Mountain Sports for the last 16 plus years. As the Club President for Birch Mountain Sports, Victor has been, and continues to be one of the main volunteers and promoters of the cross country ski sport. This Southwest Manitoba cross country ski facility has some of the best groomed trails in Manitoba due to Victor's skill and tireless dedication. Over the years, he has spent countless hours in the fall clearing, cutting and preparing the trails before the snow flies. His carpentry skills are put to good use maintaining the clubhouse and equipment or building new storage facilities. You can often find Victor, playing dodge ball with the kids in the snow or dressed up as a Pirate leading a moon-lite Halloween walk at Birch. Last fall during course preparation for the annual school bike race at Birch, one of Victor's sons managed to find him in the bush marking trails; when Victor asked him "how did you know where to find me", his son replied, "well I just put your truck on cruise control and it drove straight here". And that comment, in a nut shell, says it all.

Mike Edwards Recruited to the Role of CCC Assistant Director High Performance -

Para-Nordic

Mike Edwards 2010

Canada's high-performance Para-Nordic athletes received a boost of support in their quest for the international podium. Mike Edwards has been recruited to the role of assistant director of high-performance for the nation's Para-Nordic squad.

Edwards, who has more than 20 years of experience while working and volunteering in Canada's Nordic community at the club and program development level, spent the last three years working with VANOC's management, competition committee members and volunteers as chief of course for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Edwards has extensive experience working in a variety of Nordic-related roles throughout his career including managing events, officiating and managing facilities.

Officially starting his new role in January 2011 at the Bill Warren Training Centre in Canmore, Alta., Edwards will be tasked with leading the ongoing development and delivery of high-performance and development programs for Canada's Para-Nordic athletes. Edwards and Holland will join forces to develop a Para-Nordic high-performance plan targeted for success and growth of the program in 2014 and 2018. Edwards will also manage Canada's Para-Nordic high-performance operations including training camps and international competitions.

Cathy Harris Recruited to the Role of Athlete Development Coordinator

Cathy Harris

Cross Country Canada is pleased to

welcome Cathy Harris as Athlete Development Coordinator. Cathy's first day in the office at the Bill Warren Training Centre in Canmore was the 1st of November.

Cathy has been an actively involved Registered Sports Massage Therapist for close to 20 years. She moved to Canmore 14 years ago and, along with her husband has been an avid fundraising volunteer for the Alberta Cross Country Skiing World Cup and the  Canmore Nordic Ski club. She also assisted with organising events for Fast and Female in 2007.

She is a dedicated parent of a long term athlete development skier in the 'Training to Train' level of the program with the Canmore Nordic Ski Club and her family are committed ski club members. She relates to the environment that the LTAD model is promoting, thus making her an ideal candidate for the Athlete Development Coordinator position.

Please join Cross Country Canada in congratulating and welcoming Cathy to the Cross Country Canada team.
