Quote of the Month
"This time of year is always marked by the itch to get out skiing. It always feels great to get back on snow. With the snow guns already blazing at the Canmore Nordic Centre, and the stored snow spread around to make a short loop of skiing, it won't be long before winter is here and the transition from roller skiing to snow is complete!"
...Drew Goldsack, Two-Time Olympian

Junior Athlete Profile: Kibitzing with Knute Johnsgaard, YT |

Career ambitions outside of cross-country skiing? Outside of cross-country skiing I see myself exploring the unknown. Maybe just live off fish and berries somewhere in the wilderness. When not training/competing I am likely? Picking apples, and making assorted pastries. When finished with my cross-country skiing career, I want to? Become an inventor and share my inventions with the world. Favourite Vacation Spot? Yukon Territory Favourite Book? I do not read many books, mainly just magazines and cookbooks... but I like Harry Potter. Favourite Movie? Avatar Favourite Olympic/Paralympic Moment? Watching Ivan Babikov, George Grey and Alex Harvey all place in the top-10 during the pursuit race at the Vancouver Games. Before a race, I will listen to what song?
My boy Akon and of course Lil Wayne
My Olympic hero is?
Therese Johaug
If I could rule the world for a day I would?
Go fishing

Did you know...
Ø Ivan Babikov was one of several Canadian Olympic athletes selected to compete in an all-athletes episode of the hit TV show Wipeout. Babikov recently returned from Buenos Aires, Argentina where 13 episodes of Wipeout Canada are being taped. The first season starts November 3rd with the Canadian athletes episode airing in the spring.
Ø Former National Ski Team athlete,Tara Whitten, carried Canada's flag at the closing ceremonies of the Commonwealth Games after winning four medals including one gold and three bronze, in cycling events at the 2010 Games in Delhi, India.
Ø Canmore Nordic Centre stores snow in the summer months to support National teams that train in Canmore get on-snow training earlier in the fall. The snow is piled up and covered with sawdust where it rests for the summer months. Approximately 30 per cent of the pile melts over the summer, but a solid base remains for early skiing. The Nordic Centre hopes to expand its snow storage to cover up to five-kilometers of trail in the future by digging deeper into the ground to use the earth's insulation.

Dear Cross Connections Subscriber,
Summer has come to an end and we are anxiously awaiting the first snowfall..although there is a 1km ski loop here at the Canmore Nordic Centre which has seen a lot of action despite the unseasonably warm temperatures! Nothing like going for a ski and putting on flip flops afterwards.
The Fall edition of Cross Connections is full of great news, information, and updates. We hope you enjoy reading the newsletter as much as we have enjoyed creating it.
Here's to a winter with lots of snow, great skiing and lots of fun.

Club Profile: Menihek Nordic Ski Club NL & Lab - Run For the Hills
On a crisp sunny 7C day at 1:00 p.m., one of the most exciting community events hosted by Menihek Nordic Ski Club, to happen in Labrador West this season was off and running. Over 227 participants of all ages were on the go for the fifth annual Run for the Hills hosted by the Menihek Nordic Ski Club. The trail was excellent with loops of 2km, 3km, 5km and 7kms running concurrently. The expression seen on the faces of the youth and adults alike was something to remember. With earlier fall, the yellow leaves of the birches really stood out. The race was enjoyed by all, the AP Lowe students, the JRS students, the Menihek High Cross Country Running team, the local running club, the swim team and many more.
Lots of prizes and medals for all kids up to and including 12 years, main prize draw for each event was $100 and prizes for 13-18 years, and also prizes for adults.
Thank you to all sponsors who gave their support.
The organizing committee and volunteers did a great job.
"This was a stellar event." organizing chairperson Fay Pittman and chief of races Phillip Power said, "This was the best Run for the Hills yet".
