Canada's performance at World Junior Championships over the last 4 years and what it means

HP system plan and long term HP goals

In the past year, CCC has proceeded with a review of our Canadian HP system with the collaboration of its stakeholders and partners. The process and all of its outcomes can be found in CCC's HP campaign plan to 2014. This plan has now started to be implemented in response to the various gap analyses that have been realized and involves the whole cross country ski community, from clubs to the national ski team.

While long term HP plans are based on results of gap analyses, it is the determination of long term HP goals that allows quantifying the gaps that we feel we can fill with appropriate measures and investments over the next quadrennial or two. For example, most people would agree that it may be wishful thinking to believe we can compete with the top nation in our sport in the short term, Norway, given how far behind we are from them currently, but then what would be reasonable to aim at for Canada in the next 4 to 8 years? Looking at many factors and considerations, our conclusion is that we can aim at being in the top 8 nations by 2014 and in the top 6 by 2018, using a variety of performance measures that also reflect consistency and sustainability of performance.

LTAD - Junior Training Progression Leading to International Success

What does it take to be an internationally successful skier? Usually you will get an answer that includes things like hard work, dedication, many years of training and lots of talent. Those are all likely part of the puzzle but they aren't very tangible, they don't really tell you as a coach or as an athlete what is truly necessary. When the LTAD was first developed one of the key goals was to describe how an athlete goes from 'Playground to Podium' i.e. what is the path that they should take on that journey?

DLTA - Progression du volume d'entraînement junior menant au succès international

Comment atteint-on l'élite mondiale?

Dietary Recommendations for Athletes with Disabilities - by: Judith Haudum MS

This article summarizes the limited research pertaining to the nutritional requirements and recommendations for athletes with disabilities. Because most of the available research focuses on spinal cord injuries (SCl), this article primarily addresses this group of athletes. As a matter of background, athletes with SCI are classified as paraplegic or tetraplegic, according to the extent of spinal cord damage. The damage that results in a loss of function is referred to as a lesion. Tetraplegia is paralysis in the cervical (neck) region; paraplegia is paralysis in the thoracic, lumbar, or sacral region.

Compression Garments - From SIRC.ca
Sigvaris Athletic Recovery Sock
Sigvaris

Compression garments were originally designed for therapeutic medical use, especially for those suffering from circulatory conditions. However, over the years researchers have come to observe that there could be benefits to wearing compression garments while exercising and participating in sports. Benefits range from muscle fatigue and power production to circulation, even injury prevention and recovery. Although there is still research to be done this area, findings could change athletic attire forever.

Check out the following article posted by SIRC.ca as a review of the research surrounding compression garments.

'Geek Corner' - Pocket Camcorders

Flip ultraHD Video is a very useful tool for various aspects of coaching. Technique review, recording races and recording demonstrations for various exercises like strength training or flexibity are a few the typical uses. One problem in the past has been the challenge of bringing a video camera out in the field and quickly being able to grab some video. If you are doing a dedicated video session that hasn't been an issue, but what if you are out 20km from home and you feel like taking video of some of your skiers up a hill. Now with the new generation of pocket camcorders you can pack them away in a drink belt or pocket and quickly access them in the field. They also have other features that make them more user friendly, like built-in storage (no tapes to mess with), and direct transfer to your computer for future review or analysis.

A few different companies have recently entered the market with several versions to suit all your needs. They range in price from $150-250+ and all come with at least 720p HD resolution. You can find waterproof versions or get a dedicated underwater housing for use during the winter and those inevitable rainy days rollerskiing in the summer. For coaches that use some form of video review software, the files that are stored import directly into the software with no need to change the format or convert files. You simply bring the files in like you would from any USB drive and you an instantly review them in Dartfish or any other video software. They are also ready to upload to the internet for sharing. They aren't great for trail-side video review because of the small screen and lack of controls, but if you just want to grab a quick video of the skiers to review later on the computer they are an ideal option.

The Kodak models offer a few nice features like slow motion and frame by frame replay as well as the cables to hook up directly to a projector or TV for a larger screen and removable memory cards for ease of transfer to a laptop and expandable storage needss. Flip is currently the leading brand mainly due to the simplcity of the design and ease of use. They don't require any memory cards or batteries to worry about leaving at home in the charger. Everything is accomplished by plugging the camera into a USB port on the computer with a flip-out plug that transfers the files and charges the camera.

Club and Coach Funding Programs

AltaGas
One of the many initiatives that Cross Country Canada supports with funding from sponsors is the development of paid club coaching positions. Two of the key programs are the AltaGas Club Incentive and Coach Mentoring Program and the National Cross Country Ski Development Association (NCCSDA). For information and the announcement of supported clubs and athletes from the NCCSDA please see the recent post on the CCC website.

For the 2010-11 season the three clubs supported by the AltaGas Club Incentive and Coach Mentoring Program are the Highlands Trailblazers, Club Nordique Mont Ste Anne and Chelsea Nordic. As part of a mult-year commitment to each club they are all in the second or third year of support. The program provides funding to assist with hiring full time professional coaches in addition to a formal coach mentoring program. Updates from the clubs are posted periodically on the CCC website.
